Why did you choose to go to Lyon, France?

I had originally wanted to go to Paris, Lyon was my second choice. However, it turned out okay!

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

It depends on the country but I believe those who are entitled to an erasmus grant received around £400; of course, this isn't enough so you have to rely on your own expenses mostly. Getting a job is difficult, especially in France, but most students tend to do a lot of babysitting etc. However, you must arrive with at least 1000 euros!

What is the student lifestyle like in Lyon?

Not bad, its not Paris, but its alright and people are friendly, I don't really go out at night so I'm not an accurate judge of that, but there are many students in Lyon and drink here is cheap.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Lyon to other students?

Yes. If you, like me, come from a big city, you will find Lyon like a big town, it is easy to walk everywhere and its clean. As you may have already heard, the French administration at universities are not the most quick or efficient of institutions so there may be a lot of frustration there.

What is the food like?

Lyon labels itself the gastronomic capital of France, and indeed, they have a very distinct cuisine. Food is cheaper than in London (so is transport) but I've had difficulty finding food fruit.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Lyon?

No, I had already researched online and found my studio easily.

How much does it cost to live in Lyon?

You shouldn't need to pay more than 500 euros pm. If you're living in, say, the Bellecour area or somewhere popular like that then of course you're gonna pay more. Avoid anything outside the 7th arrondissements, my street is relatively safe but I live near a dangerous area (La Guilotiere) which is very unsafe.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

At my university they offered erasmus and french language courses but I didn't take those. I've heard they're quite boring but useful.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Lyon from your city?

By plane.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Lyon?

Hmm..Hotel de Ville perhaps.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Lyon?

The restaurants along the rue des Maronniers is pretty good, and very French.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Fourviere, the Musee des Beaux Arts, Vieux Lyon.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Lyon in the future?

Take it easy, take a deep breath, and have fun!
