Why did you choose to go to Lyon, France?

Because I wanted to improve my French. Because I already knew about Paris and it seemed too big and expensive of a city. And because of Lyon's location in the world.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

Well I still hadn't received anything by December, but I think I get around €2, 000 in total.

What is the student lifestyle like in Lyon?

It's really good. There are loads of universities and schools in the city, so there are loads of young people and places to go out here.

Would you recommend the city and the university of Lyon to other students?

If you like France, definitely!

What is the food like there?

Do you like croissants, crepes, cheeses and wine?

Lyon is one of the cities with the most Michelin stars in the world, go for the good restaurants there. Although they aren't cheap.

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Lyon?

It's a absolutely hell and all of my friends felt the same. I started to look for an apartment a month early on the internet and it was the worst. Nobody replied to my emails, they didn't answer my calls and they have loads of requirements, such as certificates, insurance, etc. The majority of people end up in student residences, which are (more) expensive and are much worse to live in, in my opinion...

Look for accommodation as early as possible!

How much does it cost to live in Lyon?

  • A shared flat: it's very difficult to find anything for less than €350, most of them are over €400
  • Food: it's more expensive than in Spain (30-40% more) so it costs around €150 if you know how to cook and goes above €200 if you eat a lot of meat and things like that
  • Transport: it's cheap, around €30 a month. It's also a good idea to get a French mobile phone (€10)
  • Around another €50-100 for going out and doing a bit of shopping.

so it costs from €500 and bit in total (being frugal) up to €800 a month, if you're less careful.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the university?

No one speaks any English.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Lyon from your home city?

By bus/Easyjet?

Where would you recommend for a night out in Lyon?

There are lots of places... The two main areas are in city centre (Hotel de Ville) and Guilliotere (they have boat clubs there). There are also several big clubs in the outskirts of the city.
