Erasmus Experience in Lyon, France by Estefania
Would you recommend the city and the university of to other students?
Of course, Lyon is a very comfortable city.
What is the food like there?
It's really good. Lyon is the gastronomic capital of France. You can find typical restaurants, called "les bouchons Lyonnais", they serve homemade and local food from Lyon. They're mainly found in the old part of Lyon.
How much does it cost to live in?
It's cheaper than Paris. If you have a car, the outskirts of Lyon are better, such as Saint-Priest, Bron, Villeurbanne... but if you don't have a car, old Lyon has some quite well-priced flats and transport is nearby.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the university?
I already spoke French, so I didn't need to go to classes, but I know that there are a lot of language schools and some of them aren't too expensive.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to from your home city?
By plane with Easyjet, but it's best to book the tickets in advance.
Where would you recommend for a night out in?
The light festival is a tradition in Lyon in December (held generally around the 8th).
The Place des Terreaux is good, too, but be careful, you might find some unfavourable characters there.
And to eat in? What are some of your favourite places to go?
There's a shopping centre on the outskirts of Lyon, called the "Carré de Soie", there are all different kinds of restaurants there.
The bouchons Lyonnais: traditional food from Lyon and homemade food.
Do you have any advice for students coming to in the future?
If you want to explore Lyon differently one day, you can go for lunch or dinner on a boat or a bus: the concept is travel through Lyon while eating (look here: http://www.lyoncityboat.com).
