Erasmus Experience in Lyon, France by Celeste
Why did you choose to go to Lyon, France?
Because it was a city I have never visited before.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The scholarship is 3 months long. We received the highest amount of it as France, together with some other countries, is considered as one of the most expensive ones in terms of daily living.
What is the student lifestyle like in Lyon?
Student lifestyle was very different compared to the one I have in Italy. We had a lot of daily/weekly assignments to do, so I had to work on them a lot. However, studies are far more practical rather than theoretical. As a demonstration, exams are not that hard as the theoretical concepts are not that much. The Erasmus association in Lyon is not that effective, so to have parties we had to rely on us. However, the university organised some events too.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Lyon to other students?
I studied at EMLyon university which has a great reputation. I would recommend it as it also has a very effective network connected with a lot of important and multinational companies. Lyon itself is very beautiful, so, again, I will suggest it.
What is the food like?
Food is typical and French people are very proud of their gastronomy. As an Italian I have a very difficult palate to satisfy but I should admit that food is very good. Based on meat and red wine. Sweets are excellent as well.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Lyon?
It is very difficult to find a good accommodation in Lyon, particularly if you search for it online. We had to come here in person and contact an agency. In addition, rent costs are very high in each part of the city.
How much does it cost to live in Lyon?
The cost of life is pretty high, the hugest amount is dedicated to the rent. Restaurants are affordable, not that expensive but they are neither cheap.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
In the University it is possible to study both in French and in English. I did English exams but life is easier if you know French as well. In fact, everyone speaks in French, also during lesson. In fact, many students are French and sometimes they ask questions to the teacher in French and the Professor answers in French as well.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Lyon from your city?
From Italy, by train.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Lyon?
I would recommend to go to Lyon 2eme and have a look to the city by night: this place is full of restaurants. To have some fun after dinner, I would suggest to go to the Rhone where there are a lo of bars, pubs, discos right next to the river.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Lyon?
"Le nord", "Le sud", "La Traboulerie", "Two Amigos".
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Kind of everywhere.
