Dennis' Erasmus experience in Lyon, France
Why have you decided to go to Lyon in France?
I've been there before and I liked it, so I decided to go to Lyon.
How long is your scholarship for? How much do you receive for support?
It's for 5 months. I receive €280 per month, which is not enough to cover for life expenses.
How's university life in Lyon?
Fantastic! Lyon is full of young people and university students, mainly international ones.
Would you recommend this city and Lyon University to other students?
Yes, of course!
How's their food?
It is hard to express a positive opinion on French food if you are Italian, but I'm used to it! However, Lyon is known as France's capital of gastronomy and there are some delicious plates that you should try.
PS: if you love cheese, you are in the right place.
Was it hard to find accommodation in Lyon?
Yes, a lot! Start looking well ahead of your stay.
How much is life in Lyon?
France is generally very expensive. I would say between €700 to 900 per month, but it depends on your lifestyle.
How are your language skills? Have you done any modules at university?
I learnt it in a short time. At university, there is a compulsory Frecnh module for Erasmus students: it's very helpful!
What is the cheapest way to get to Lyon from your city?
I came by car as it is close to my city (Turin). I know that there are coaches that aren't very expensive, but the best and cheapest solution from Turin to Lyon is surely by Blablacar.
Where would you recommend to go at night time in Lyon?
At Hotel de Ville (Place des Terreaux), there are many clubs, pubs and particularly discos. Even Vieux Lyon is very beautiful in the evening and there are many choices of clubs (I would recommend Big White). If you are in Lyon in a warm period, go to the Quais (which is the riverside) as it is always full of teenagers and it's perfect for a beer with friends.
What about places to eat? Where are your favourite ones?
I don't have a favourite place, but I would recommend to try the different Boucheries Lyonnais which you can find everywhere in the old town (Vieux Lyon)! They are typical restaurants where you can find regional dishes (mainly from Lyon city) and understand why Lyon is defined as France's "capital of gastronomy".
What would you recommend to visit?
Lyon is a very beautiful city and you would realise it while strolling. The Cathedral of Fourvière must absolutely be visited! From there, you can see the whole city. It can be easily reached thanks to the metro and funicular.
Do you have any recommendations for future students in Lyon?
Settle yourself in advance. Once there, make the most of your experience! Time flies, but you will experience some unforgettables times. Enjoy!
