Why did you choose to go to Lyngby, Denmark?

I chose Denmark 'cause I wanted to improve my English in a good-English-level country. Also, living near Copenhagen was very attractive as well.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

At first 5 months (fall semester), extended now to one semester more to make my bachelor thesis.

I hopefully am receiving 2000€ (the Minister didn't pay yet). It's the same amount for 5 or 10 months (in my case and for the rest of the Spanish people today). It's a fixed financial assistance.

What is the student lifestyle like in Lyngby?

It depends on where do you live. Some people spend their days around the campus and Lyngby because they live there, and some others go to Copenhagen more often 'cause their residences or flats are closer to the city. But mainly the lifestyle is going to DTU in the working days, and going to parties in the DTU's S-Huset, or to the dorm's parties, or to the nightclubs in Copenhagen in the weekend. There are also some trips & events with ESN (Lapland, Sea Battle... )

Would you recommend the city and the University of Lyngby to other students?

Yeah, I would. It's most likely that they're gonna spend a good time here, but it's not all party. In the DTU, people work a lot as well, so it's not one of these crazy erasmus places. You'll have free time, but it won't be fun all days and weekends.

What is the food like?

Meat with boiled potatoes, vegetables and some kind of sauce. Almost always. In the DTU cantine there's also 'vegetarian option', but it's smaller. Nowadays, the prices are 30 DKK for normal menu, 20 DKK for vegetarian. And the salads are priced by weight (7 DKK each 100 gr. ). Good value for the price.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Lyngby?

It's a big pain in the ass for most of the people. They offer much less accommodation than requests they have. The advice? Talk with the accomodation, and bug them. Be insistent. They usually find something at the end for you, but you may come to Denmark without your accommodation issue solved. That was my case, but at the end you can manage it. By the way: based on my own experience and the ones of my colleagues, the housing and renting webpages are completely useless.

How much does it cost to live in Lyngby?

Quite a lot, but not that much. For me, it's like 900€ a month:

  • More than 400€ in accommodation (in my case, 3100 DKK. It's quite cheap for what you may find here)
  • The other 500€ are spent in food (Rema 1000, Netto and Fakta are the cheapest ones), transport (it's expensive, but I usually take the bike), and leisure (beers, nightclubs, etc. )

Summing up, for living cheap here: bike everywhere, don't take the habit of eating in restaurants, don't drink anything else but beer and don't smoke.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

Living just with English is perfectly possible. They offer Danish courses, though.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Lyngby from your city?

Bike. Always bike. Get a bike. Work out.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Lyngby?

In Lyngby? No idea. Go to DTU, dorms or CPH.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Lyngby?

Nope. Not a clue. Cheap student life...

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Once you've seen the whole downtown of Copenhagen, I would suggest going to Bellevue strand (the beach), and the deer park (between that beach and the DTU). Amazing place the deer park...

Visit some lakes as well: Furesø, Bagsvaerd lake...
