Erasmus Experience in Lublin, Poland
Why did you choose to go to Lublin, Poland?
First, because it is very cheap and I was informed that it was a student city, and I assumed that there would be a lot of parties.
How long was your Erasmus experience? How much money did you receive in scholarships?
My experience lasted 9 months, although I stayed for 10. They gave me 485 euros per month, but they still owe me 200, which I assume is lost.
What was the student life like in Lublin?
The student life was perfect: 5 or 6 universities, so many young people, incredible parties, and the best of all: very little studying. There's no need to step foot in the university all year, and for me I enjoyed this very much so I could sleep the entire morning after going out, and by the way, I passed.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Lublin to other students?
Yes, of course, completely. I would recommend in a heartbeat to anyone that has the opportunity to go, because for me it was the best year of my life.
How was the food in the country?
Very good and cheap. I have not eaten better in my life, but that is of course because my roommate, Paolo Derosas, cooked us meals everyday, and I have not met a better chef than he. I believe that the supermarkets we went to had similar things to those in Spain, but I am not too sure because my roommates were always the ones who bought and made the food.
How did you find accommodation?
No joke, I came with nothing and for the first 10 days I was living on a floor half in ruins. Fortunately, my future roommate, Paolo Derosas, who changed my life, told me at a party the third or fourth day that there was a free room and I went there.
How was the price for housing? And prices in general?
Very cheap in general. I paid 125 euros a month, In general some residences are around 100 euros, and some can go up to 200, depending on where it is and how it is.
How did you find the language? Did you take a course at the University?
I used my mother tongue (Spanish) a lot. It was important to know Spanish when you arrived, so you could get to know the other Spaniards, then when you're already drunk you can go crazy with English. I also know that a lot of Polish parties are spoken in English, but it is good at times to know Spanish and at times to not speak... and finally, you realize that you have learned enough without even trying, and I also liked hanging out with with the Italians a lot and speaking English with them, and what happened at the end was that I picked up a little accent.
Polish is a very rare language, and they offer a course, but only geeks and nerds go. Also it is in the morning and I am usually sleeping. At the end I learned some words and even some phrases like "to jest okno" with which was enough to hook up.
What is the cheapest way to get to Lublin from your city?
Alicante-Krakow with Ryanair, and then in Krakow you can take a train or a bus to Lublin. It is kind of a pain in the ass, but it is the cheapest.
What places do you recommend to go out in Lublin?
There are a ton of amazing nightclubs, cheap alcohol, but at the end you'll have so many "1 shot 1 euro's" and the result isn't so cheap... The best are Czekolada, Fashion, Place, 68, Oranzada (they closed it but they are going to reopen it), and I believe that Soundbar is becoming popular.
And to eat in Lublin? Can you tell us your favorite spots?
My favorite place was my house, in Langiewicza 26, floor 80, but Paolo no longer lives there, so... I recommend the Chata, the McDonalds, and a place in the Old Town called "El Pavo. "
And how were the cultural aspects?
To get deeply immersed in the Lublin culture I recommend going to Ladies Night every Wednesday at the nightclub Czekolada. The first time that I went I thought that I had died and went to heaven. I also recommend every Thursday night in the Place and also to always end your nights at 68.
Is there any advice that you would like to give to future students in Lublin?
That you should not think about the right time to go, that when you are there you will begin to drink earlier than in Spain.
