Wicked, a brilliant musical
Hello again brave people and thrill-seekers!
I'm going to talk to you about the experience I had watching the famous musical Wicked in the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London.
For those who are not very well acquainted with the story of the Wizard of Oz, I'm also encouraging you to see it, because this audiovisual and artistic spectacle is not to be missed by anyone.
For my birthday, I received a ticket to see this musical in London 3 years ago. My level of English was not like it is now so I ran the risk of not understanding anything that was going on in the musical, so look here guys, there are not subtitles for you to use, but in this life you need to have is determination and bring yourself to do it, although recognising our limitations.
The musical Wicked took place in the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London, which is located in front of the entrance of the Victoria London Underground and it is in one of the biggest tourist zones in London.
I'm not sure how much the tickets cost, but I'm sure that they costed less than they are worth to see this marvellous production, and if you have any doubt about that, I've left you the link of their website so you can have a look at it: https://www.wickedthemusical.co.uk/london
When entering the theatre, after showing your ticket and going through the main door, you will get to a large room where you will find the stage. A stage that when they turn off the lights it takes on an impressive ambience. At the top of the stage there was a metallic and fierce-looking dragon that was suspended in the air, which I thought it was merely a decorative feature. At the back of the stage there was a screen which they had projected the image of an old map which had a route marked upon it, and emerald green lights covering the sides around it.
Without a doubt the first glance of the stage had already captured the attention of those that we had come with to see the show.
This musical tells the untold story of the Witches of Oz, where there is a Good Witch, the witch of light magic, and the Wicked Witch of the West, the green-coloured witch.
During the show and through its songs, something unique to a musical, the story will be revealed. We discover that these two witches were very good friends in the past, when they attended the same magic school, but for reasons due to magic their destinies took different, and totally opposite, paths, but another turn of the events led them to find each other again and to try to find a way to smooth things other between them for the good of the Kingdom of Oz.
As you will understand, I don't want to reveal the whole storyline, otherwise I won't leave you with any intrigue, but I'd like to say that I was really moved by the show, partly due to the message that it delivered about friendship, power, greed, bond and all these values which are human prerequisites, and partly due to their voices and the costumes.
The voices of the actors and actresses were incredible, and as well as being talented in this respect, their acting was also impeccable, and that's why I consider musicals to be one of the most complicated works of theatre, because whilst controlling your voice you have to act with your body too, and communicate the same message with both.
And the costumes, for me this is one of the most fascinating aspects of these kind of theatre performances... All gorgeous, and without lacking a single detail, from the white and shining dresses of the Good Witch, up to the dismal and dull attire of the Wicked Witch of the West, and the rusty, but somewhat shining armour that the Tin Man wore, and the folksy and coarse scarecrow's outfit...
One of the moments I remember was when one of the characters was lowered down by the stage tech on or surrounded by a bubble, with the spotlight illuminating only then, completely captivating the audience's attention.
Another one of my favourite moments was when the dragon that seemed to be merely a decorative feature started to produce flames of fire from his nostrils... To this day, I'm not sure if it was a visual effect or real fire, it has been a long time since I saw this musical, but it certainly seemed real and the animal moved slowly, as if it was due to his weight that he couldn't move any quicker, it was done very well and made me a bit frightened, to be honest...
And concluding this story of my experience, I hope and wish that if you visit London you will have the chance to see this musical; that is now also being shown in Dublin as of the 1st of September, in the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre: http://bordgaisenergytheatre.ie/index.php/artist/wicked1
Thank you and enjoy the magic of the musical and theatre culture!
