My Erasmus Experience in Ljubljana, Slovenia by Eliot
Why did you choose to go to Ljubljana, Slovenia?
Due to its geographic location, it's really easy to travel around Eastern Europe and explore other places. I was always persuaded by the climate, the fact that the country is really international and that the people have a good command of English.
How long's your stay? What financial aid do you receive?
I'm staying for 6 months and I get 140 euros a month from the Erasmus grant.
What's the student vibe like in Ljubljana?
Ljubljana is really lively, especially for students, but it is still a little capital and you get to know a lot of people really quickly, so it's really friendly.
Would you recommend the city or university to other students?
I would recommend the city without a doubt, however I have to say that the university, in particular the Arts Faculty for me, isn't very well organised. The city and surrounding areas are magnificent and the city centre is really pretty and attractive.
What's Slovenia's food like?
The food is good, especially as the government pay for 50% of your restaurant meals, which means that students can eat out in restaurants at a great price. The Balkan food isn't very varied but you can find loads of different restaurants.
Was it hard to find accommodation in Ljubljana?
The university helps you find accommodation and you can also use a few Slovenian websites which advertise accommodation within all price brackets. But I advise students nevertheless to come 10 days before to be sure that the accommodation is good. Also, Dorms the student accommodation is very well lively.
What are living costs like in Ljubljana?
Around 200 to 300 euros a month to share an apartment. 300 euros a month covers your daily living costs.
What's it like learning the language there? Did you take part in a language course organised by the university?
I didn't take part in a language course, and the language is quite difficult to learn. Lessons taught in the Economics faculty are often in Slovenian, but the teacher gives us permission to not attend and just do a personal project at the end.
What's the most economical way to get to Ljubljana from your home town?
By car or plane using Wizz Air, a low budget airline.
Where do you recommend to go out in Ljubljana?
- Companeros club.
- Cirkus club.
- Metelkova.
- And Ground Zero.
And what cultural places do you recommend going to see?
Don't miss out on the Ljubljanica riverbanks where you can have a quiet drink gazing at architecture, such as the oldest bar in Ljubljana - the Sax Pub, the castle and the covered market.
Any advice for future students going to Ljubljana?
Go there for 6 months, as although it's small, it's a good amount of time if you thoroughly enjoy it. . Don't hesitate to go speak to other Slovenian people your age who, for the record, can all speak English really well and will happily help you.
