Melisa's Experience in Ljubljana, Slovenia

What is it like to live in Ljubljana? Would you recommend it? How is it?

Ljubljana is a small town , but it is very nice. If you want to live in Ljubljana, it won't cost you as much as living in other European cities like Brussels or Paris, etc. I recommend it, both as a place to live permanently or to just spend a few months on an Erasmus exchange, or similar. Ljubljana is very cheap, especially for students. There are apartments to share that are very cheap (from 100 euros per month per person) and they also offer very clean dormitories for students, some of which have recently been renovated (prices usually vary from 40 to 120 euros). Transport is also very cheap and many Erasmus students don't even buy a bus pass because everything is so close. Ljubljana also has many monuments and many archaeological beauties for those who love historical and modern buildings.

What is the student lifestyle like in Ljubljana?

I would say that the student lifestyle in Ljubljana is very picturesque. There are many parties and many places to go. Although Ljubljana is quite a small place, it offers many bars/night clubs where you can have fun and meet people. Ljubljana is always full of people, from those who live there permanently and those who only come to study for a year or sometimes less. The prices of drinks and entry to night clubs are not very high either. For example the entry ticket for the most expensive night club will cost you between 5 and 10 euros.

For those who don't party much, there are also many things you can do and enjoy, such as parks, swimming pools, student groups or organizations for sports or gym, galleries, exhibitions, theatre, cinema, shopping centers and many other things.

How much does it cost to live in Ljubljana?

As I told you earlier, living in Ljubljana doesn't cost you much. For example, living in a flat with all expenses included will cost you about 300 euros. Of course it also depends on how much you know how good you are at budgeting and saving your money.

Did you have trouble finding accommodation in Ljubljana? Do you have any advice?

In Ljubljana it is not difficult to find suitable accommodation . There is a dedicated page where they offer properties: http://www.nepremicnine.net/

and you can also consult your university for information about student dormitories (if not, you can contact me by email with any questions: [email protected]).

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Slovenian food is delicious! They have many typical dishes and that's why it is so difficult to choose just one. Each region of the country has its own typical dishes, some more modern and others are older, which only our (great)grandmothers know how to prepare. We have very good main dishes and delicious desserts.

What places would you recommend visiting in Ljubljana?

Ljubljana Castle is very nice. It offers a wonderful view of the whole city. It is especially beautiful in winter when the whole city is covered with Christmas lights. There is also a very fine restaurant on every corner. Sometimes there is a cinema under the stars also and many other things. Ljubljana has several lakes where you can cool down and have a glass of wine or juice, whatever you like.

What advice would you give future students heading to Ljubljana?

Finally, I want to let you know that Ljubljana is a city that attracts a lot of people, both young and old. Going to Ljubljana from Erasmus is definitely a nice experience . I know a lot of Spanish students who came to Ljubljana and couldn't help but just say nice things about this city. It's really worth it, because it's an experience that lasts a lifetime and it helps you build a lot of friendships. Come to Ljubljana, you won't regret it!
