Experience in Ljubljana, Slovenia by Tjaša
What is it like to live in Ljubljana? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Everything's nearby and on walking distance in the city center. The quality of life is quite high, because there are enough of green surfaces, chill out spots and the city by itself is very clean. I would recommend it to people who are searching for more cosy, laid-back city atmosphere (the population is around 300.000 inhabitants). The city is really small, but more and more alive especially during warm parts of the year.
What is the student lifestyle like in Ljubljana?
I know that all foreign students are having a blast here, because the restaurants&bars price are quite affordable for them, there are some popular night clubs, but ordinary bars are not opened later then 00.00 or 1.00 in the morning usually. The student eating system is really well organised and there are more and more events and festivals organized every year.
How much does it cost to live in Ljubljana?
It depends on in which part of the city do you live and if you live in students residency or not, but let's say from 300-500€/month.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Ljubljana? Is there any advice you can give?
No, usually it's not difficult. There are some web pages in slovene where you can find the adds, it's nice if some slovenian speaking person can help you with it. You can also use CS page as a tool to easier find the accomodation.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
It's really difficult to speak about "typical slovenian" food, because it consists of really heavy dishes which used to be made for peasants, but there's a bounch of italian, mexican, chinese, thai, even indian restaurants, a lot of places with fast food and even some slovenian restaurants, which offer a mix of bit of everything on their plates. After a loooong night "burek" works really well, there are a lot of kebab places opened even during the night.
What places would you recommend visiting in Ljubljana?
Metelkova city, Ljubljana's castle, Rog, Park Tivoli, Rimski zid (Roman wall), Modern Gallery, riverbank of Ljubljanica, Cemetery Žale, Koseški bajer (Koseze pond), the quarter of Krakovo, Rožnik-hill with a small church and restaurant on it and the Bottanic garden. If you have a bike, you can also make some nice trips to spots nearby the city as Šmarna Gora, Ljubljana's moor, Črna vas,..
Is it good to eat out in Ljubljana? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
It depends on which type of food do you like. Really good restaurants can be very expensive. Cantina mexicana, Joe Penas, Thai Inn, Da Buda, Foculus, Pizzeria Parma, Meta&Bazilika, Tandori have this student coupon system and you can eat relatively well from 3 to 5 €. I'd also recommend Violina and Romeo, breakfast from Bakery Pečjak on Čopova street and home made ice-cream from the cafe Moj Žep.
Is the nightlife good in Ljubljana? Where is good to go?
People say it is, but there's no such a wide range of different music styles.. Personally I would recommend Orto bar, Metelkova city and Rog. I'd send you to bar in SEM (Etnographic museum-they also organise swing evenings-if you're a swing lover, also check Kavarna Union's events), bar in cinema Kinodvor next to the railway station and Daktari. If you want to drink cheep beer and enjoy really laid-back scene, you should go to Anika bar (it has a new name, but everyone knows it under this name) next to Trnovo church.
What advice would you give future students headed to Ljubljana?
Have fun, be nice to people and people are going to be nice back to you. Enjoy your stay!
