Experience in Ljubljana, Slovenia, by Kristina
What is it like to live in Ljubljana? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
The city is clean, calm, safe, it has everything you need and within a palm reach.
What is the student lifestyle like in Ljubljana?
The conditions are perfect for students, we have cheap student dorms, some flats can be a bit expensive, but there can always be found something to accomodate all wishes. The food is also very cheap, because the government partly finances it for students. There is enough possibilities for partying, relaxings, sport, everything is cheaper if you are a student in Slovenia.
How much does it cost to live in Ljubljana?
I finance myself. As I am living in a cheap student dorm, I am paying around 70 € per month for it. The food costs around 100€ per month. For other expenses, it depends on what kind of lifestyle you want to live.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Ljubljana? Is there any advice you can give?
I don't have much experience about flats, but there are a lot of internet and facebook pages where you can look for it. I can only recommend personal viewing of the flats.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Food is amazing. Mostly fresh, diverse, the portions are big. You can eat slovenian, mexican, asian, brasilian... cuisine. My favourites are mexican and traditional slovenian.
What places would you recommend visiting in Ljubljana?
The Ljubljana castle is a must. Also Tivoli park, Nuk library, Preseren square, take a boat ride on Ljubljanica river or just walk down the beautiful streets like Trubarjeva, Mestni and Gornji trg...
Is it good to eat out in Ljubljana? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
My favourite (for food, but not so much staff) is Cantina Mexicana. There are numerous spots to eat out in Ljubljana. It tastes better if you find them for yourself.
Is the nightlife good in Ljubljana? Where is good to go?
Nightlife can hardly be compared with bigger european capitals, but it has some clubs and pub crawls that you can go to. Best one is probably Cirkus.
I prefer student parties and music festivals or concerts, or even private parties, that just happen spontaneously in student dorms.
What advice would you give future students heading to Ljubljana?
Get a bike, study hard, go on a roadtrip through the country (it's a small and gorgeous diamond), don't be afraid of seamingly cold exterior of the local people, fall in love with the slovenian culture and enjoy!
