Experience in Ljubljana, Slovenia by Hostel 24
What is it like to live in Ljubljana? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
It's a nice city to live in, very quiet, green and small, which is a very nice thing. It's easy to get everywhere with the bike share system.
How much does it cost to live in Ljubljana?
The average monthly rent for a room in a shared flat is about €200-250. And if we add to this all the service charges, the rent stands at about €400. So, the total price would be around €700-800.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Ljubljana? Is there any advice you can give?
I don't think it's difficult. You shouldn't be too picky or should seek accommodation further away from the city centre if you wanna pay less. Living in the centre is expensive, but in the outlying suburbs is much cheaper. Also, you can reach the centre in 10 minutes by bus for affordable fares.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Slovenian traditional food is delicious: we eat a lot of meat, potatoes and sausages, and we drink fine wine (in Maribor we have the oldest wine in Europe). Nobody turns down a delightful beef soup. Slovenian cuisine offers a wide range of dishes because it's influenced by all of its neighbouring countries.
What places would you recommend visiting in Ljubljana?
Can you guess?
Is it good to eat out in Ljubljana? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes, it's good to eat out there. In the centre, lunch prices vary between €5 and €20. There are lots of places to choose from. I like Spirit Kitchen and Bar, Druga violina, Dabuda and a nice börek in Konkurenca after a night out.
Is the nightlife good in Ljubljana? Where is good to go?
It depends on what you are into! My favourite place is Metelkova, where they play great, underground music. You can chill out there. But there are also some bars and clubs like Cutty Sark, Skelet, Cirkus and Parlament (they will never let you down; they're always open). And in the summer there are a lot of open-air concerts with cool electronic, jazz or any other kind of music.
What advice would you give future students heading to Ljubljana?
Party, party and party. Eat good food and try to visit the whole Slovenia. It's a beautiful country with gorgeous landscapes! Slovenes are welcoming folks and love to practise their English.
