Erasmus in Ljubljana
Why did you choose to go to Ljubljana, Slovenia?
My flatmate had been there travelling and told me that it was a very welcoming city and that is what I was looking for from my Erasmus destination. Besides, it was the place that the least amount of people applied to and that reassured me, so I went for Ljubljana in the end.
What is the student lifestyle in Ljubljana?
Being a small city, I thought that the Erasmus students would be very concentrated, but actually there are a lot of people from outside of Ljubljana, especially people from Greece and all of the Spanish students arrive for the second term.
What is the food like there?
The food is really cheap, but you'll always end up going for fast food, because the local food is full of spices and things. It's cheap, in general, you can eat for €3.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Ljubljana?
Actually it is, because the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Medicine is very snobby and no one helped me with my paperwork and things when I arrived. Besides, the coordinators replied late to my emails and in very weak English, so I had to look for a room in a flat before I got there, which I had to share with two really unclean Slovenian guys for months.
How much does it cost to live in Ljubljana?
My flat cost around €250 a month with the bills included. Food is cheap, but transport there ends up being very expensive, because you have to take loads of different kinds of transport to get to where you want to go. Be careful with the taxis, they're wise guys and swindle more than a few people.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the university?
Slovenian is impossible, people will actually overlook you a bit at the university, I took it well, but it's not the best environment for me, I'm very open and always talk a lot.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Ljubljana from your city?
I think that this is the worst thing about Ljubljana, it's really badly connected with other European capital cities and plane tickets are super expensive. So you don't end up travelling by plane very much, rather going by train to nearby cities. Besides, to get to Madrid, you have to stop over in Venice and then take a kind of Blablacar, which ends up being quite expensive.
Where would you recommend for a night out in Ljubljana?
There are a lot of local pubs and a couple of clubs, where students get together on Thursday and Fridays. Drinks there are more expensive than in the pubs, because only foreigners go to them. I would recommend you go to Meterkova, an alternative pub which may seem a bit scary initially because of the area it's in, but you'll like, even love, this place. You have to wrap up warm at night if you don't want to freeze to death.
And to eat in Ljubljana? What are some of your favourite places to go?
McDonald's and all of the fast food places you could think of. Besides, there's a burger place called Fanny and Mery, I think, if you get them on a normal day, they do great hamburgers.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Ljubljana is very pretty, it has a lot of history, which you can see in the streets these days. I think that is the best thing about the city.
