Erasmus Experience in Ljubljana, Slovenia by Teresa
Why did you choose to go to Ljubljana, Slovenia?
My choice was not made just by Ljubljana in itself, but actually for the location of Slovenia. In spite of being such a beautiful country with many lovely places to visit, its location is perfect to go travelling around other countries as well.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I received around 200€ per month. As far as I know, the scholarship is different from university to university in your home country. Although, Ljubljana is not awfully expensive, and it's easy to keep your "pocket" full.
What is the student lifestyle like in Ljubljana?
There's always a meeting, or party in several spots in town, the students organize themselves pretty good. Wich is good, because it's easier to meet other people in Erasmus, or just befriend locals. Generally being a student in Ljubljana is actually a privilege, since students have a lot of discounts (for example, in food).
Would you recommend the city and the University of Ljubljana to other students?
Yes, I would. I'm not attending the University of Ljubljana, so I cannot give my personal opinion about it, but my friends who are, keep telling me that the University is good and works just fine.
What is the food like?
I haven't found out much Slovenian typical food, but at least in Ljubljana you can find food for each taste. And kebabs, lots of it.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Ljubljana?
In the beginning of my stay, I spent a few nights in a hostel and finally I ended up in a student dorm, wich actually is the best option, because all of the dorm locations are cheap and not to far from the city center.
How much does it cost to live in Ljubljana?
Obviously it depends on the lifestyle of each person, but I'd say around 200€/300€ per month, including dorm rent, public transports pass, food and personal costs.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available in the University?
Actually Slovenian it's not an easy language, at all! At least for people who speak latin languages, it's harder.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Ljubljana from your city?
By plane, directly to Ljubljana, or plane to another country (like Croatia or Italy) and then bus or train.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Ljubljana?
There are several different places to hang out at night, but the most common ones are Metelkova and Kongresni Trg. And also a few night clubs. There are also several music bars and pubs, and a lot of music shows happening all the time.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Ljubljana?
For thai food, I really recommend Thai Inn Pub. For pasta or "normal" food, Evrope is pretty good. Joe Peñas it's the best Mexican restaurant in town. For trying a bit of Brazilian and Spanish food, Casa Mulata it's the best choice. All around Ljubljana is easy to find pizza and fast food places open 24h, and some bakeries called Mlinar and Back Werk for coffee and good pastries.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The city center is mandatory, it's such a beautiful place, and the best option is to take one of the free tours around the center. The Ljubljana castle is a main spot, with a lovely view for the whole town. Taking a boat in the river, near the center, is also a lovely trip.
Is there any other advice that you could give to future students who are going to Ljubljana?
If you are coming in the winter months, and you're not used to the cold, bring a lot of warm sweaters. And boots, and gloves. Hope you enjoy Ljubljana as much as I did!
