Erasmus Experience in Ljubljana, Slovenia by Simona

Why did you choose to go to Ljubljana, Slovenia?

Because it is not that far away from the place I come from, it is not so expensive and because of beautiful nature.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I received a scholarship for the whole time I am staying in Ljubljana. It is 400 euros per month.

What is the student lifestyle like in Ljubljana?

The food is really great and there are many opportunities for students in Ljublajan in general - cinemas, theatres, caffes, clubs, bars, sport opportunities, parks...

Would you recommend the city and the University of Ljubljana to other students?

I would definitely recommend it - it is a nice city (of course there are few things I don't like about it), great for students and in spring semester Ljubljana is so beautiful with all the flowers and colours.

What is the food like?

Food is delicious! They have really awesome food - but actually, most of the places where you can use it are international (Italian, Chinese, Indian,... ), so you have to find another opportunity to try Slovene food.

How much does it cost to live in Ljubljana?

It is not too expensive, but it is definitely more expensive than in the Czech Republic. I mean - especially accommodation costs much more.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

For Slavic speaking people, it is quite easy. We had course of Slovene before the semester started which was organised by University and wasn't even that expensive. It was great, because I didn't just learn a bit of Slovene, but also met people who are still my friends here!

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Ljubljana from your city?

Probably bus, but my parents actually drove me to Vienna and they I took the bus from there. Some people I know went also by train or Blablacar.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Ljubljana?

Pr´skelet club which seems to me really nice or (if you like electro music) K4 club.

If you are not so huge fan of clubs I would recommend you Zifeblat = really friendly cafe in the city centre, but they usually close at 10 p. m.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Ljubljana?

We usually use Restaurant 123 on our faculty, but my favourite restaurant in Ljubljana is "Skuhna"!

And from the end of March on Fridays, you can also try "odprta kuhna" - where many restaurants from Ljubljana show and sell their food.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Ljubljana in the future?

The best way of transport here is bicycle, but sometimes is city really crowded with it, so it is dangerous to travel by that.

But in general I am sure you will love Erasmus in Ljubljana! And Slovenia as well!
