Erasmus Experience in Ljubljana, Slovenia by Luca
Why did you choose to go to Ljubljana, Slovenia?
Ljubljana was my first choise because it's a small european capital (compared to other european city) but it's rich of culture, good universities, the landscape is really impressive, the parties are awesome and you can easier know lots of people because of the city's dimension.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I'm staying here for six months during the summer semester (from mid-February to the beginning of July). My university gave me 250€ per month. It's not sufficient because I can't pay my rent, go out with friends and go to the supermarket with 250€ per month, but life in general is cheaper than in my country (I'm from Italy).
What is the student lifestyle like in Ljubljana?
In Ljubljana I have lots of free time, so I can hang out with my friends for take a coffee, hike all around the country (Slovenia is fairly small, so you can quickly go anywhere with the public transport or with a rent car, which is the better solution because the prices here are quite low and if you are a student you have some discounts) and, of course, have some nice low budget parties.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Ljubljana to other students?
Yes, I highly recommend both the city and the university. The University of Ljubljana is the main university here in Slovenia.
What is the food like?
The food is really good and here in Ljubljana you can find lots of ethnic restaurants. Students here can eat with a system that permit to save you lots of money (I spent maximum 4,50€ for a dinner, but you can eat just for 1,50€, 2,00€ or even free, and the restaurants are good). The main part of these restaurants are here in Ljubljana because there are lots of student and is the main city, but you can find them also all around Slovenia.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Ljubljana?
If you want the lowest price you have to look for your accommodation early, but it, s the same for all the cities around the world I think. I spend 300€ for a single room 15 minutes by bike to the city center, all costs included, which is a really good price.
How much does it cost to live in Ljubljana?
it depends on you. If you want to have dinner in the best restaurants, have party every night and spend money every day, you're stay here could be very expensive, but generally the prices are very affordable.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Slovene language is really difficult for me, but literally everyone here knows English, so you can easily stay here without have a knowledge of the local language. Of course if you're interested in it, the university and the ESN offer different types of courses where you can learn the Slovene language, which I higly recommend to do when you are here only because of your knowledge.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Ljubljana from your city?
I live in Verona and the easiest, cheapest and fastest way to reach Ljubljana was by bus. Flixbus offers tickets for less than 15€ one-way from my city to Ljubljana.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Ljubljana?
There are lots of pubs and discopubs, especially in the city centre, but you can find also some nightclubs and have party with not so much money.
