Erasmus Experience in Ljubljana, Slovenia by Daniela
Why did you decide to go to Ljubljana, Slovenia?
I obtained an internship place in a big German corporation in Ljubljana.
How long does the scholarship last? How much money did you receive for support?
I received Erasmus funding. As far as I know the difference in rate for students and interns is about a hundred euros. I received 350 euros, so for students it should be 250.
What is the student lifestyle like in Ljubljana?
I have heard only positive things from other Erasmus students.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Ljubljana to other students?
I would definitely recommend the city to other students. Not too big, not too small and you're very quickly at various attractions in the entire country as well as in Italy, Austria and Croatia.
What is the national cuisine/food like?
I liked it very much. It reminded me of the German or Austrian cuisine, but influences from the Balkan are recognisable. There are however many restaurants offering international food in Ljubljana as well.
Did you have to pay to find accommodation in Ljubljana?
No.
How much does it cost to live in Ljubljana?
Accommodation: 200€ for 10 m2 in central location, eating in supermarket is comparable with Germany, eating with student Boni is very affordable. 4, 30 in restaurants, 2, 50 in the Mensa.
Is the language easy to understand? Does the university offer language courses?
With some foreknowledge in Slavic languages you are naturally at an advantage. However many Slovenes speak outstanding english and often very good german as well.
What is the most economical way to travel from Ljubljana to your city?
I traveled by bus, but you can fly from Ljubljana as well. It is however more expensive to fly. You however have the option to drive with someone or with Go-Opti to Venice and fly from there out with a low cost airline.
In your opinion where is the best place to party in Ljubljana?
I went to Cirkus once and enjoyed it despite the many warnings against it. A good place to go to concerts is the Zoo.
And to eat? Can you recommend a few good restaurants?
Hiša pod Gradom was my favourite restaurant. Fany and Mary have good burgers and Mediteranea offers mostly Slovene dishes. Skuhna has an international kitchen which changes weekly. When I was there it offered Tunisian dishes. Dabuda was very popular among the students and at Cacao you can supposedly get the best ice cream in the city.
Are there interesting cultural sights to visit?
I would recommend each and every one of you to begin your residency with a Free Walking Tour. Among other things you will learn there what tourist attractions there are in the city and which can be visited again when you are on your own if you wish. Tours run twice a day, starting at the Pink Church.
