My Erasmus Experience in Krakow, Poland - by Pau
Why did you choose to go to Krakow, Poland?
I didn't want to go to one of the typical Erasmus countries such as Italy, Germany or the UK. I wanted to go to a country I'd never visited before, like Poland. I've never regretted this decision.
How long did your exchange last? How much were you paid?
I went for five months and receive 200 euros per month as support grant.
What's the student life like in Krakow?
Krakow is a city full of students, which means that on your way to university in the morning, you'll see that the street is full of young people at all times of the day.
Would you recommend the city and University of Krakow to other students?
1000% yes.
What's Polish food like?
It's nothing like Spanish food... their recipes are simpler. Lots of meat with sauces, 'pierogi', lots of 24 hour kebab kiosks, and above all, lots of birra and vodka. In Carrefour/Alcampo they have a special section just for vodka.
Did you find it hard to find somewhere to live in Krakow?
No. There are lots of useful websites run by Krakow ESN (Erasmus Student Network) which you can use to find accommodation easy peasy. A room in a residence is cheaper than having a flat, but I'd still recommend getting a private room in a flat, and it's better to find one in Kazimierz district than near to the main square.
How expensive is living in Krakow?
It depends on your spending habits, but most things are a lot cheaper here, and you can live on less money than you can in Spain. I shared a room and paid 150 euros a month, but it was a huge room with a view of the river. Accommodation isn't especially cheap.
How are you finding the language? Have you signed up to a language class at the university?
Since Polish is one of the three hardest languages in the world, I didn't make too much effort to learn it, though I did want to learn a few phrases such as how to say hello, how are you, good morning, and a few jokes.
What's the cheapest way of getting to Krakow from your home city?
By plane, I imagine.
What are the best places for partying in Krakow?
It depends what you're into! Everything is cheap, so in one night, you can go to three or four clubs, get drunk out of your sense and realise the next day that you only spent 10 euros on the entire night. It's brilliant!
What about eating out in Krakow? What are your favourite places?
Moah Burger and Corner Burger are similar places, as they both sell enormous tasty hamburgers with chips and coca cola (for six or seven euros). Their prices are similar to that of McDonald's in Spain, but the quality's a lot better. There are loads of restaurants near the main square.
What does Krakow have to offer in terms of culture?
Loads. I would recommend the free tours which run every day.
Do you have any advice for future students coming to Krakow?
Beautiful, open girls, quiet and shy Polish guys, international people, cheap food, quick and super cheap transport (12 euros for a trimester ticket), the possibility of travelling around Poland and the rest of Europe really cheaply, parties every night... you won't regret coming here! If you get here without a place to live, I recommend Pink Panther hostel which is full of young people and puts on events every night such as vodka tasting or wine evenings! Simply perfect!
