My Erasmus experience in Krakow, Poland by Felix
Why did you choose to go to Krakow, Poland?
Because I knew that the cost of living was low and I had never been there.
How long did you stay there? How much funding did you receive?
3 months.
I got an Erasmus grant of almost 1000 as well as my normal scholarship (600 in the first 2 months).
But my parents also helped me a bit.
What is student life like in Krakow?
As I was in a lab most of the time (which had a cool atmosphere), I don't really know much about REAL student life because I didn't really meet or speak to Erasmus exchange students.
Would you recommend the university of Krakow to other students?
Absolutely. It's pretty, not expensive, pleasant in summer (a lot colder in winter), the nightlife is great...
What is the food like?
Very good. Lots of meat, grains... the hearty stuff. But not always. And the food is all really cheap.
Was it difficult to find accommodation?
I organised things at the last minute, but I was lucky to come across a great place with a really cool flatmate. I don't think someone who has more time than I did would have any trouble.
What is the cost of living like in Krakow?
I have to spend around 300€ a month and then 200€ a month on rent.
How did you find learning the language? Did you attend a course at the university?
No, in the lab I spoke English only.
Most of the locals speak English, but not all of them... it can be difficult when they speak Polish.
What is the cheapest way of getting to Krakow from your home?
I think by bus or car, but it takes a few days... The plane is a bit expensive even with the low-cost airlines but it only takes 2 hours to get from Paris to Krakow.
I think you can also travel by train, but I don't know all the ways to get there.
Where do you recommend going out in Krakow?
There are lots of bars, clubs and strip clubs in the old town (be careful, some of them are a bit strange).
You could also go to the Jewish quarter for the bars and clubs.
And for food? What are your favourites?
The Milkbar in the Tomasza street.
The Gruba Bula in the Jewish quarter serves the best burgers in Krakow.
And at Nowy square which isn't far away, they serve the best ice cream in Krakow.
Which cultural visits would you recommend?
Auschwitz and the salt mines are a must-see.
The Krakow Zoo isn't bad and isn't too expensive. There is also a great viewing point there.
You could also just walk around Krakow; it's beautiful.
Any advice for future students in Krakow?
Just don't hesitate, it's worth it: Krakow is the gem of Poland, life isn't expensive and student life is great.
But beware of the strip clubs because some of them know how to chat to poor students and you could end up spending a fortune on the shows...
