Experience in Kaunas, Lithuania by Vaidas
What is it like to live in Kaunas? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
City has it's own charm. People who lives in it always will complain about one thing or another, but they love it, it's their home. At night the city is really calm, but if you know places you can get in to the move, dances, hobbies and so on! I would definitely recommend this city to live for a while. Kaunas city revealing itself just by how long time you will be staying. So it is up to you how you will experience it.
What is the student lifestyle like in Kaunas?
Full buses of students at mornings and evenings! Most of the students have part time jobs so you always see some people rushing somewhere. But if not a part time jobs cafes are attractive place to spend an afternoon, and moving to the weekend pub's, night clubs, bowling clubs ect. full of young mass ready to relax after week of studies.
How much does it cost to live in Kaunas?
It depends from what country you are. How much you eat, drink, partying and so on. But basically you can live with around 400 euros per month.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Kaunas? Is there any advice you can give?
For foreign students it is a challenge. Because most of older people who rents or in general for oldies English language it's just an unknown language. But there are hostels, if it's urgent to find something. Anyway my opinion would be to contact the coordinator or universities student embassy to help with that. Because our universities most likely giving really great dormitories to students from abroad.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
If you visiting Lithuania you can't leave before eating our national dish, "Cepelinai" (it's is potatoes with mostly pork) and if there are any issues with meat, you can order it with curds. In the city you have big choice, from pizza places, burger places to some really good restaurants, or just on the corner 24/7 kebab kiosk...
What places would you recommend visiting in Kaunas?
Kauno sąntaka, Trijų mergelių bridge, Dainų slėnis, Ąžuolynas park, Prisikėlimo church... And as I said: explore it yourself!
Is it good to eat out in Kaunas? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Nothing specific but you should visit "Paolo pizza", "Pizza Jazz", "Bernelių užeiga".
Is the nightlife good in Kaunas? Where is good to go?
The old town is full with nigh clubs but my recommendations is to go to "Dejavu club" there is high security so not everyone allowed to enter so look sharp (no sport wearing). Than more freer style for some students mash up go to "Džem pub" there is some action starting from Thursday!
What advice would you give future students heading to Kaunas?
Be patience for asking for a advice, or ask younger people who may know the power of english :) Read something about BC "Žalgiris". It may save your ass at the middle of the night... If some stranger is being really nice to you for no reason - it's not common in Lithuania. Every person are really focused in what they doing so if you want to start a conversation you will need to break the ice maybe with some basic words like (excuse me - atsiprašau), (Hello (official) - sveiki). Thank you - ačiū.
So good luck to every one and welcome aboard at Kaunas!
