Erasmus Experience in Kaunas, Lithuania by Stephanie
Why did you choose to go to Kaunas, Lithuania?
I had to do one internship abroad and I wanted to go somewhere where I'd never been before, so I chose Lithuania.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
10 weeks, and I received nothing.
What is the student lifestyle like in Kaunas?
I don't know, I did an internship.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Kaunas to other students?
If you speak Lithuanian it's probably OK, but otherwise, English is very rare.
What is the food like?
I don't like the bread, cheese and meat in Lithuania. Other stuff, like cookies, drinks and fruits are very good.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Kaunas?
No.
How much does it cost to live in Kaunas?
I paid around €150 per month. It can be cheaper, but also more expensive, so I think the normal price would move between €100 and €150 per month.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
No, Lithuanians speak very fast and I barely could understand a word. I don't know about courses.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Kaunas from your city?
By plane.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Kaunas?
To the city centre, where most of the clubs and pubs are located.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
A lot of churches and museums.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Kaunas in the future?
Learn a little bit of the language before you get there.
