Erasmus Experience in Kaunas, Lithuania by Diogo
Why did you choose to go to Kaunas, Lithuania?
I've chosen to come to Kaunas because I wanted to experience how it was to live abroad and I also wanted to live in a city that had snow during the winter, because we don't have it in Portugal. I've also chosen due to the low prices that exist here comparing to Portugal, as well as the fact that, due to its location, it's pretty easy to travel around Europe from here!
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
5 months, from September to January. I am going to receive a total of 1000€.
What is the student lifestyle like in Kaunas?
It's awesome, not gonna lie. The classes that I've had so far are pretty easy and we have a lot of free time as well. And people from our age are very nice to us. Not only Erasmus people of course, but the Lithuanians are really communicative as well, which was kind of a surprise to me.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Kaunas to other students?
Definitely! If you're trying to choose based on the same reasons that I've chosen, then you won't regret choosing Kaunas.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Kaunas?
It did because I didn't knew where to search. I was lucky to find Erasmusu, that made my life much easier.
How much does it cost to live in Kaunas?
I think we spend around 25-30€ per week on food, with all the meals included. The flat is 225€ per month, but my friend pays 185€ because he has a smaller room. It depends on what you want.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Not at all! For me it is very difficult and I only know how to say some words and sentences. But a lot of people can speak English, so you'll be fine.
I think there are courses!
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Kaunas from your city?
By plane. It wouldn´t be possible in another way. It's too far away.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Kaunas?
I think the best club I've been to is Taboo, but on the weekends you have to pay to get in and the drinks are quite expensive. Other than that you have Deejay, Basemente, which are kinda similar, and Dzempub, which has kareoke's nights, beer pong and, overall, that was the place we've been the most to.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Kaunas?
The main street has some really good restaurants such as Charlie Pizza, Grill London, Casa della Pasta and a Mexican one that is amazing. I guess the old town must have pretty good restaurants as well.
Oh and in the main street there is a Portuguese place called Natabox which has some typical Portuguese food! I would definitely recommend to go there.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Kaunas in the future?
If you choose Kaunas you won't regret it. I'm having the best months of my life, and I'm kinda sad that it is almost coming to an end. Good luck!
