Experience in Jaén, Kike's Spain
Is Jaén a good city to live in? Would you recommend it? What is it like?
It is a small city (you can go from one end of the city to the opposite end in 30 minutes) and peaceful. Living in Jaén is quite cool and in addition you have the chance to travel Andalucía and the entire of Spain. A great disadvantage might be that the city is located amongst mountains, so going up the hills can be a little tiring, but it is good for the butt.
How is the student atmosphere in Jaén?
The student atmosphere is really good and it gets better every year. Besides, its Campus is great.
How much does it cost to live in Jaén?
It depends on the type of life you have; around 400-500 euros can guarantee you a good life.
Was it difficult for you to find accommodation in Jaén? Can you give us some advice?
It wasn't hard, but I can't give any advice on that because I met my friends and then I lived with them. You can search in the Internet, use agencies maybe, although the best thing is the word of mouth and the little notices you can find all around the university.
How is the country's food? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is healthy, varied and exquisite, as it is the mediterranean diet in general and the Andalucía one in particular. Also, the bars in Jaén offer locals and visitors the possibility to enjoy their tapas (small portions of typical food, served free with the drink). I personally love breadcrumbs, a dish similar to fried potatoes with onion, paella...
What places do you recommend that people visit?
Santa Catalina Castle, the fountain Fuente del Lagarto de Jaén, the park Parque del Bulevar, the park Ciudad de los Niños, the park Parque del Seminario, the cathedral, Iglesia de la Magdalena church, Baños Árabes (Arab Baths), the street La Carrera, Iglesia de San Ildefonso church...
And what about food places in Jaén? Can you tell us your favourite places to eat out?
The coffee shop Oh là là (on Bernabé Soriano street), El Barranco, El Santuario, El Abuelo...
What places are good for partying in Jaén?
DM disco place (the best atmosphere for erasmus students), Kharma disco, El Consuelo...
Any advice for future students staying in Jaén?
To take advantage of the warm weather, enjoy its parks and scenery, eat out and also party (the locals are very open although people don't speak English often), to enjoy its gastronomy and to travel as much as they can. There are wonderful places like Úbeda and Baeza and the Parque Natural de las Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas. And, may they be happy!
