Why did you choose to go to Hamburg, Germany?

My supervisor, who had the expertise in the field of study I was concerned of, was at Uninversität Hamburg

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I have a DAAD scholarship for 1 year for my PhD exchange programme (stipend € 1200 per month)

Would you recommend the city and the University of Hamburg to other students?

Yes. It is a beautiful and peaceful city to live in, but it is a little expensive compared to other cities in Germany.

What is the food like?

Mostly bread items (typical for Germany). You can also find shops selling foods from different regions of the world like Turkey (most popular here), Africa, Asia (India, Pakistan, China, Thailand, Japan) etc.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Hamburg?

Yes, finding an accommodation is the most difficult part and it is expensive. However, if you apply early for student dorms in shared apartments or so, you will get an affordable and cheap room to stay.

How much does it cost to live in Hamburg?

Around €600 per month (for an average person)

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

Yes, as with any other language, in the beginning, it is quite difficult to grasp. But then it gets easy as you practice your skills communicating with the residents here.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Hamburg from your city?

Taking a flight is the best way to travel to Hamburg from my city, Cochin (in Kerala, India)

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Hamburg?

There are a lot of night clubs and pubs here. Night life is quite active, however I haven't explored them yet.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Hamburg?

Near the Hamburg Central Station or Hauptbahnhof, there are lot of good restaurants.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Quite a few (especially the beautiful Harbour of the city)

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Hamburg in the future?

Be prepared for the cold and the occasional rain during the winter.
