My Erasmus Experience in Groningen, The Netherlands. By Miguel.
Why did you choose to go to Groningen, Netherlands?
I chose Groningen because I wanted to go to Holland but I didn't want a big city like Amsterdam, the university was well known and because on a website they spoke very well about it.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
In my case it was 5 months, and the grant has been €250 per month during this period.
What is the student lifestyle like in Groningen?
The student atmosphere is impressive. There are loads of students and the atmosphere is good in general.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Groningen to other students?
Of course I would recommend it. The city itself is not very big, but it is good for going out clubbing and travelling to other parts of Holland is cheap.
What is the food like?
If you are comparing it to Spain, it obviously leaves a lot to be desired. I would especially reccommend the Stroopwafels and the Bitterbollen. The cheese as well, of course, you need to try it.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Groningen?
It took a couple of weeks but it was all due to problems with the unversity. I would recommend doing it ahead of time because there are very few residences avalible in May.
How much does it cost to live in Groningen?
It obviously depends on where you want to live, how much you go out, what you want to eat, or where you want to travel. It can vary widely.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the university?
In my case, when I arrived here, I realised that I didn't have almost any idea abotu English because they speak it so well in Holland. For you, you will have no problem communicating with them.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Groningen from your city?
By plane to Amsterdam/Eindhoven and then train with a group ticket that costs €7 to Groningen.
Where would you recommend for a night out in Groningen?
If you're Spanish, Sunny Beach is your place. Shots are €1 and beer €2. There's good music and always good atmosphere. For big parties with ESN, there's Kokomo. And the Three Sisters as well to have a beer in.
Is it good to eat out in Groningen Can you recommend some good restaurants?
The market in the centre of the city. You can find tasty and cheap food.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
For a cultural visit, you should go to the Martini Tower, Groningen Museum or do a free tour through the city.
What advice would you give future students heading to Groningen
Don't go for 5 months because you will want to stay a lot longer!
