So we were on our way to Sparta when we passed a ruined city with the remains of a great castle on a hilltop: Mystras. Climbing the hill was a bit of work, but the view over the landscape was rewarding, as you can see!

Mystras

The story of the castle begins in the early 13th century as French crusaders conquered much of Greece, and they were despised by the native population. In the 15th century, the famous philosopher Plethon settled here, bringing Plato's philosophy to new heights. From then onwards and in the 18th century, wars against the Turks and Ottomans devastated the city; only Sparta was rebuilt.

Mystras

High above the churches and houses, our tour guide explained the history of the castle of which only ruins remain due to the reasons named above. What a pity!

However, over the strong walls you could see very far, even to the distant hills.

From this perspective, you could well see the various layers of walls making for a good defensive position. Part 2 will follow!
