Epidauros
Epidauros is a UNESCO world heritage site on the Peloponnes. It is famous as a sanctuary to Asklepios, the god of healing. The archeological site shows the following buildings:
The gymnasion (sports complex) was used for therapeutical purposes. In its centre stands a Roman odeon as the Romans conquered Greece in the first century BC.
The stadion was used for sports competitions, and there are still some demonstrations today.
Behind modern building blocks you can see the abaton, a recreative complex in which the patients layed down to sleep and wait for the god to heal them.
The great theatre belongs to the most famous buildings from the site because of its wonderful acoustics: You can drop a coin on the stone plate in the middle of the stage, and you will hear it even in the top ranks! We actually tried this, and it worked ... these are some architectural skills!
Climbing the top row of the theatre, we could overlook the site and the surrounding hills: Surely a nice place for cultural events (competitions and performances)! The site also had a museum which I will show you in my next post.
