Delphi: The Temple of Apollon
Delphi not only had the famous oracle I wrote about in my last post, but also a sacred site with many temples. I will now introduce them to you:
The Hall of the Athenians was built after the wars against the Persians to store the spoils of war inside. It was built like a stoa, but the roof did not stand the test of time, unfortunately. On top of it looms the Temple of Apollon.
The Temple of Apollon has lived through many phases or destruction and reconstruction, some by war and some by fire... however, it remains one of the most important temples in Greece as the Pythia sat in the adyton (kind of apsis). Its doric columns give it a simple look, yet it is so crucial! Modesty is key in sacred places...
Here you get an idea how huge the whole complex was! You see parts of the Temple of Apollon, the thesaurus of the Athenians and many ruins along the Holy Street.
This is the Temple of Apollon in all its size seen from above. The rectangular foundation is completed by the round adyton (apsis). It's a majestic view with the mountains in the background...
Part 3 will follow, hang on!
