After seeing so many artifacts, marble inscriptions and statues of Zeus, Venus and Augustus et cetera it was time to go outside again: We saw the Temple of Apollon in Bassae, UNESCO world heritage site, and arrived in Messene.

Bassae and Messene

The thick city walls defended the city in its conflict with Sparta. In the background, you can see a stoa.

This is the famous theatre, it overlooks the whole complex and the plain.

This inscription names Caesar as the Emperor (autokrator).

The colourful mosaics in the floor show wild hunts and beast fights.

This small theatre has a very ornate floor which is still in its original condition!

Lastly, the stadium invites you to imitate the holy games that have taken place here; in the distance, you can see a temple framing the place. This archeological site is named one of the most beautiful in Greece, and for a reason!
