Erasmus Experience in Gothenburg (Sweden) by Soéli
Why did you choose to go to Gothenburg, Sweden?
Funny story: I have been named after the wife of a famous biker (Jarno Saarinen). He is from Finland. So I have always wanted to visit the Nordic countries. And here I am!
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I am not studying in Goteborg. I am here for an internship within Volvo Penta.
What is the student lifestyle like in Gothenburg?
As I mentioned, I'm not a student here, but I could say that it seems great. I talked to lot of them and they seem really happy.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Gothenburg to other students?
Yes, of course! I love this city. The public transport is perfect. There are buses during the nights, during the week-ends... Whenerver you want and almost wherever you need.
You can go to parks, lakes and so on, so you will not be bored. If you are, you can still travel.
What is the food like?
I am from France, so... hahaha
Not so bad but not so good. Swedish people do not have real cheeses but they do not know it so it is okay, haha. No seriously, you have to train to get used to the food but it comes quickly. At least you can eat shrimps and they are delicious!
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Gothenburg?
Lots of time. Haha. I had the chance to know someone who helped me. But it is difficult to find something.
How much does it cost to live in Gothenburg?
- 6000 SEK per month for the flat (you can have a cheaper one)
- 450 SEK per month for the bus (if you are a student)
- 1200 SEK per month to eat ( I do not know exactly)
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
You need to have to personnumber to get lessons if you are not at school. The pronunciation is difficult but it is nice to learn if you want to fit in.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Gothenburg from your city?
By the air. Or by walking (it is cheaper than the plane).
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Gothenburg?
Hard Rock Cafe :)
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Gothenburg?
- Bistro Merlot
- Hard Rock Cafe
- Yammy
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
- the city center
- Haga
- Liseberg
- archipelago
- the big park I-do-not-remember-the-name
- the museums
- Universum
- cinemas
and then you can easily go to Copenhagen / Oslo / Stockholm / Helsinki / Tallin.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Gothenburg in the future?
Come here, have fun and talk to other people!
