Erasmus Experience in Gothenburg, Sweden by Nuria
Why did you choose to go to Gothenburg, Sweden?
Because I have been travelling a bit before deciding where to stay and Gothenburg is a city that has everything, with good people. It's kinda cosy place to stay.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I am gonna stay here for 2 years. I am doing a Master and I am not receiving any money at all... working hard!
What is the student lifestyle like in Gothenburg?
Amazing! Some of the classes are kinda boring but comparing with the ones in Spain are shorter and more intense, active and participatory lessons. Totally recommended to everyone.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Gothenburg to other students?
Totally recommended, the both of them!
What is the food like?
Meatballs, salmon and "afterwork dinner", not so much to say.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Gothenburg?
A lot. It is better if you start 6 month ahead, the queue is pretty long. However, they could make exceptions if you go there personally begging for some place to live (only working for residences).
How much does it cost to live in Gothenburg?
1000€ minimum per month. Only the rent in the cheapest residence could be more than 400€ per month.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
If you do not have a good level of English, it is better to start studying a lot before coming, because during the lectures the level of English is around a B1-C1.
The Swedish is another thing, but in my case is not so hard.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Gothenburg from your city?
Flying with a cheap company in low season and then take a bus in the airport that goes directly to the city center. No way you can get lost.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Gothenburg?
There are only 2 places. The Avenyn where all the fancy and expensive clubs are. And Järntorget and Andra Långatan where there are more basic pubs and really good atmosphere. Really friendly.
Sticky Finger or Pustervik if you wanna listen to rock music, usually live. They offer concerts almost every weekend and some on Wednesday or Mondays.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Gothenburg?
All of them are really expensive compared with Spain. But during Fridays in almost all bars there is something called "afterwork deal". From 17. 00 till 19. 00 with a beer you have a buffet included.
If you don't wanna spend so much money, just go to Burger King or McDonalds.
If you wanna spend a little bit more, you can go to a Chinese restaurant in the top floor in Nordstan (the mall).
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
There are not so many cultural places to visit, but I think just walking around the city is nice. Slottskogen is an obligatory stop. It is a big park in the middle of the city.
If you are interested on arts, maybe Göteborg Museum of Arts.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Gothenburg in the future?
Don't be scare of the weather, because it is not as bad as the people say !
