Erasmus Experience in Gothenburg, Sweden by Jorge
Why did you choose to go to Gothenburg, Sweden?
I chose to go to Gothenburg because the Nordic culture struck my attention. I also received very good recommendations.
How long does the scholarship last? How much money do you receive as aid?
8 months. I received around 290 euros a month.
How is student life in Gothenburg?
There is a great University life in the city. Many, many students are immigrants and there is a very good welcome. What's more there are University parties every month, in which the whole university is occupied with stages and music rooms.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Gothenburg to other students?
Definitely, yes. It's a very comfortable city with rapid and comfortable transport, a great student atmosphere and with cheap flights to many destinations that give you the possibility to get to know many other countries, if your budget allows you to, which are very expensive to travel too from Spain.
How is the country's food?
Expensive and not very varied. There is a market with products mainly coming from South America in Kviberg, with more affordable prices. It's that it's not very well known and the vendors and consumers are mostly immigrations, so the Swedish might not be familiar with it.
Was it hard to find accommodation in Gothenburg?
No, requesting it giving plenty of time at the SGS.
How much does it cost to live in Gothenburg?
Around €450 a month for sure, generally more.
How is the language? Did you go to any courses at the University?
Swedish is very difficult. I took the free course that the university offered and this allowed you to be more relaxed whilst going shopping, but it isn't enough to hold a small conversation.
What is the most economical way of getting to Gothenburg from your city?
By plane.
Which places would you recommend to go out to party in Gothenburg?
The clubs are generally all the same. The parties in the residences usually end up being more economical.
And to eat in Gothenburg? Can you name your favourite places?
It's expensive to eat out. I recommend the different 'After Work's on Fridays.
And as a cultural visit?
The Universeum Centre is very good and usually the university facilitates you with free entry, via a leaflet with offers, which they give you upon arriving or during the first few days.
Any advice that you want to give to future students in Gothenburg?
You can't let a visit to the north of the country escape you (Kiruna); in order to see the auroras boreales. It's an exciting spectacle. You will not regret it.
