Erasmus Experience in Gothenburg, Sweden by Idil
Why did you choose to go to Gothenburg, Sweden?
By a friend's advice.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I received 500 € per month for 5 months. My accommodation expenses were 430 €/month. Scholarship is totally not enough! I even had friends who got around 200 €/month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Gothenburg?
Gothenburg is totally a student city. Except for the high prices for food and other many things, here is a place to be if you're studying!
Would you recommend the city and the University of Gothenburg to other students?
Definitely apply for your accommodation at the very beginning. If you're not placed into a student housing, immediately look for Boplats private houses. To be honest, housing was the biggest problem for me. By the way, don't say "I won't bring clothes with me, I'll buy them", because it's pretty expensive, as it is food.
What is the food like?
Swedish kitchen is not very large but I like their sweet things. Every single thing contains sugar, which was surprising for most of us. By the way, don't miss the after hour deals. Find nice places to have after hour, especially for Friday afternoons.
How much does it cost to live in Gothenburg?
It's hard to tell, but, maybe 6000-7000 sek? If you travel and go out often, then living in Gothenburg can cost you 9000 sek.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
It was easy for me to start because of its similarities with German. However, it's hard to practice it because everybody speaks English. In fact, when you try to make a sentence in Swedish, they immediately switch to English, which is bad for you if you want to practice.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Gothenburg from your city?
The best way to go to Gothenburg is to go, from Izmir to Copenhaguen with Pegasus Airlines, and, then, to Gothenburg by bus (Nettbus or Bus4you).
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Gothenburg?
Sticky fingers is a very nice club with different kinds of music in different floors.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Gothenburg?
After working, I recommend going to Babar for warm meals for 48 sek or la Cucaracha for cold meals for 30 sek.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
I'd recommend to visit other cultural cities such as Stockholm and Copenhagen.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Gothenburg in the future?
You'll love it here, especially if you have good friends to enjoy it with.
