Celia's Erasmus Experience in Gothenburg, Sweden
Why did you choose to go to Gothenburg, Sweden?
I chose to go to Gothenburg due to its distance from Spain and its proximity to other gems that are difficult to access from our home country.
How long does your grant last for? How much money do you receive as financial support?
The grant lasts for 5 months and I receive:
- 100€ a month from the Ministry of Education
- 150€ a month from the European Union (EU)
- 250€ a month from the Andalusian Government
What is student life like in Gothenburg?
It's really good - this city welcomes more students than any other in the whole of Scandinavia.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Gothenburg to other students?
Without a shadow of a doubt.
What is the food like in Sweden?
In all honesty, I didn't try much, but the pastries are very good.
Was it difficult for you to find accommodation in Gothenburg?
No. I stayed in Helmutsrogatan, a student residence that I also completely recommend.
How much does it cost to live in Gothenburg?
Around 500€ a month for the cost of the residence and more than 100€ a month for food, transport, trips and nightlife... All in all, I would say between 800€ and 1000€ per month.
What is the language like? Did you go to any language classes at the university?
Very good, although I came here already having a B2 level of English. Here, everyone speaks English, so it's not necessary at all to learn Swedish.
What is the cheapest way of getting to Gothenburg from your city?
There are direct flights with Ryanair to Gothenburg from Malaga at decent prices.
Which places would you recommend for nightlife in Gothenburg?
Above all, the parties on Wednesdays at the University of Handels' bar.
Nightclubs: Valand, Excet, Sticky Fingers, and, most importantly, the FestU, which is organised and held at Chalmers University of Technology.
And eating out in Gothenburg? Can you mention your favourite places?
Here, the concept of "afterwork" is very typical, and this consists of going out to eat after work every Friday from 5pm to 7/8pm. Many places offer an open buffet with beer, or special food and drink discounts each week. An afterwork is not something to be missed here!
And cultural hotspots?
The islands are beautiful, and, besides, you can access them with your Vasttrafik card (this is the company that manages the trams here too), so there's no need to pay any more money. The landscapes are very peaceful and serene.
Is there any advice that you want to give to future students in Gothenburg?
Don't miss out on the opportunity to take a trip to Lapland, or other trips organised by Scanbalt Experience for that matter. The price-quality ratio is very good, and you get to have unique and unforgettable experiences with several other students.
