Erasmus experience in Frankfurt am Main, Germany
Why did you decide to go to Frankfurt am Main in Germany?
It was the only available destination for my course of study.
How long does the Erasmus grant last? How much money did you recieve in support?
6 to 10 months. €330 per month.
What's the student life like in Frankfurt am Main?
Good.
Would you recommend the city and the university of Frankfurt am Main to there students?
Yes. The Goethe Uni is definitely better than FH Frankfurt (which a professional school), but my course of study was only held at the faculty college.
What is the food like there?
You can find everything there, it is an international city and therefore, I would say that you can adapt well there.
How did you find accommodation?
The accommodation service of Frankfurt am Main? Before setting off for Germany, I did an application for students.
What is the cost of rent? What are the living costs like in general?
For students it's not very expensive (more or less from €175 for a single room with a shared bathroom to €300 in a apartment). For private apartments you have to pay a lot more, €350-500 per month (similar to cities such as Rome or Milan). For living costs (food and various other things), you can spend quite a lot: they have everything in more convenient supermarkets and shops (e. g Penny market, Netto or REWE).
How was it adapting to the language? Did you attend any courses at the university?
I started to attend a German language course at the university but I couldn't finish it because the lessons clashed with other courses. In general, German is not easy and needs a lot of practice, so if you want to learn it, speak with the Germans and not just between the Erasmus students.
What is the cheapest way to arrive in Frankfurt am Main from your city?
Ryanair. You can fly from Rimini, Pescara, Bologna, Roam. The flight always costs very little, but you have to take into account that the airport is 130km outside of the city and you will have to take the bus (it costs €12 ).
Where would you recommend for going out at night in Frankfurt am Main?
Kafè Koz, Bockenheimer Warte, typical student bars. Other than Erasmus parties in student dormitories, there are different bars of every type (ones to try are: Cocoon, Robert Johnson in Offenbach, Living underneath the Central European bank etc. ). Alternatively you can go to the Ostbahnhof or Sachsenhausen, which is full of bars.
Where can you eat in Frankfurt am Main? Can you tell us about some of your favourite places?
Vapiano. But there is also a pizzeria "Da Cimino" in the Bockenheimer Warte, which is managed by Italians and is a bit pricey but the pizza is excellent.
Are there cultural places to see?
All along the river it is full of museums. I also strongly advise that you climb to the top floor of the Main Tower.
What advice would you give to future students of Frankfurt am Main?
You are there for 10 months and not 6. The time passes relatively quickly and once you return, "you suffer". :)
In addition, even if the transport in general costs a lot, you have to travel around and explore. Go also to Berlin! .
