Erasmus Experience in Erlangen, Germany by Junaid
Why did you choose to go to Erlangen, Germany?
Because I want to pursue my postgraduate studies in Medical engineering.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
Well, I am not receiving any scholarship funds, I manage my finances from my Deutsche bank blocked account, I can withdraw 720 Euros per month, which is more than an enough to manage your monthly expenditures.
What is the student lifestyle like in Erlangen?
It depends upon student's own personality, I am shy person so most of my leisure time just expend watching sports or movies in my room. We go on tours arranged by the University (which happens twice or once a month ) to different cities in Germany or Europe, you can also go hiking with friends. You would have enough time for enjoying a culture and life here in Germany besides your studies.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Erlangen to other students?
Absolutely Yes, Erlangen has very friendly people, good number of them can make conversation in English so you won't feel too alien even if your German skills are very poor, though it would be highly recommended to have German language skills up to B1 level, as all the posts and legal documents will only be in German. FAU has immensely flexible and advanced curriculum and very cooperative and qualified professors and tutors. I would particularly suggest to review your basic concepts and nuances behind them in your chosen field of study.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Erlangen?
Not really, all students are accommodated and advised by FAU accommodation office, but if you arrived, after commencing of semester than you might have difficulty finding a residence, but you can post your request on Facebook pages, or on Gesucht and most likely you would able to find a reasonable place. FAU accommodation office also proposed you to contact to a particular real estate agency which will cost 300 euros, which is very reasonable considering market prices.
How much does it cost to live in Erlangen?
Around 650 Euros per month.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
In my personal experience it's difficult to learn German if you have no previous knowledge. Language courses are offered by Language centre of FAU, which offer courses for absolute beginners to expert level, free of cost.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Erlangen from your city?
Public transport is the cheapest and easiest way to travel to University.
