Erasmus Experience in Dublin, Ireland by JOSE
Why did you choose to go to Dublin, Ireland?
It is a relatively small city, but multicultural, you can find people from all over the world. The people in general are nice, laid-back, they are very reliable, you can move around peacefully and without fear at any time of the day. The infrastructure is lovely, and walking along the banks of the Liffey is an exceptional experience.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Dublin to other students?
Trinity College and Dublin City University are excellent centres for higher education.
What is the food like in the country?
They eat a lot of potato-based food. The bread is really good. The white meat are great quality, and of course the Guinness beer is unbeatable.
Did it cost you to find accommodation in Dublin?
Accommodation isn't difficult to find but in general it is a bit expensive, more if you expect certain commodities. On the outskirts of the city it is cheaper, and thanks to the excellent transport system it isn't a problem staying in those areas.
How much does living in Dublin cost?
If you want to live comfortably you have to have about 900 to 1000 euros a month, you can live with less, but it would be more tight. With that amount you can get saving in order to be able to visit other places, in and out of Ireland.
What is the language like? Did you go to some course at the University?
The offical language is English, but because the city is cosmopolitan you can find people who speak other languages, particularly Portuguese, Spanish, Arabic, German etc.
What is the cheapest way of getting to Dublin from your city?
Dublin is very well connected with international flights from different parts of North America, multiple European cities (with really low cost flights).
What places would you recommend for going out partying in Dublin?
The street of Temple Bar has many nice places, the same with O'Connor.
And what is it like to visit culturally?
Dublin is a place full of magic, history and traditions. Entering a pub is something incredible, going to Phoenix Park is a whole natural adventure, walking through its pedestrian streets is a trip to the city's lively culture. But Ireland is much more than Dublin, the cliffs both to the east and the west, and its permanent fair beauty, Malahay and its castle, Galway, Cork, Donegal, are places full of fascination.
Some advice that you want to give to future students in Dublin?
The city is relaxed, and the farther you are from the city centre the better you will live, the centre is too accelerated, it's nice to pass by and share, but the outskirts are better for resting.
