Experience in Colmar, France by Sébastien
How did you find living in the city of Colmar? Do you recommend it? How is the city?
Colmar is a city in which the absence of activity takes more than a heavy toll on young students. Unlike Strasbourg, which has developed as a culturally attractive city, Colmar suffers from a lack of initiative. The city is still very busy. There are buses absolutely everywhere and traffic jams are very frequent!
How is student life in Colmar?
I think Colmar is a city mostly made up of school children, sixth form students and old people. As a consequence, student life is practically non-existent and leisure activities are more than very limited. You can count the good bars to go out in on one hand and the daily routine of the same leisure activities (cinema, bowling) gets tedious very quickly.
Fortunately, every year during April, the city of Colman welcomes the Foire aux Vins, which is the event to not be missed in Colmar and for good reason: the Foire welcomes amongst the world's biggest DJs and is frequented by the most fashionable groups.
A true revolution for the young people of Colmar!

How are living costs in Colmar?
Colmar is a relatively pretty bourgeois city but the living costs aren't insurmountable (except during Christmas time during which the prices go up because of the Christmas markets and resulting tourism).
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Colmar? Do you have advice to give?
No idea.
How is the food in the city? What are your favourite dishes?
The city offers traditional Alsatian dishes but it's very far from living up to its neighbour: Strasbourg.
Nevertheless, Colmar has established itself on its wines, which have earned it its nickname of the 'Alsace's Wine Capital'.
Which places do you recommend to see in Colmar?
La Petite Venise is worth going to but you will have walked around it all very quickly. Nevertheless, I advise you to go to all of Colmars' Christmas markets if you get the chance. Scattered around the old town, they are made up of artisans and food stands (and mulled wine! ).
The magic of Christmas is maintained through the artificial illuminations but careful of the crowd! Thousands of tourists come from the four corners of Europe every year to admire them and sometimes, there isn't even room left to walk!

And to eat in Colmar? Can you tell us your favourite places?
Unless you have a sufficient budget, Colmar is mostly characterised by fast food places, sandwich shops, pizzerias and especially kebab shops. Nevertheless if your wallet is sufficiently full, I advise the tartes flambées in the Petite Venise quarter.
