What is it like to live in Coimbra? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

First of all, Coimbra, my hometown, is one of the safest cities I know. Of course you should always keep an eye on your things but nothing compared to some other big cities. There are a lot of open spaces (so not claustrophobic at all) and Coimbra may be concidered a small city - if you're used to Barcelona for example. If you're a tourist, don't worry! the majority of portuguese people speak (or do their best on) english and some still speak fluent french, same with spanish! There's no doubt in my mind that I would recommend this city and If you continue reading I'm sure you'll end up thinking the same.

What is the student lifestyle like in Coimbra?

Coimbra, as many of you know, has a strong sence of university tradition. Between many of them there are two celebrations that stand out. Around October we have "Latada", the time when the freshmen are welcomed to the univerity life. Later on, around May, there's the "Queima das Fitas". The time when we say goodbye to the students that are finishing their course. To me this the most beautiful week starting with the night of serenades under the old cathedral of Coimbra. And then with the "parade" where each car decorated with paper flowers represents their own course -some students also take the chance to criticise the current days' problems. In both cases you can enjoy many concerts, parties, maybe shed a tear and feel the universitary vibe of Coimbra.

How much does it cost to live in Coimbra?

I can't be of any help regarding accomodation. Besides that I am sure that food is surely afordable.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Coimbra? Is there any advice you can give?

It is difficult for me to answer this question since I stay at my parents house everytime I pay a visit.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Our food is very good and it's not difficult to get a healthy diet. However, there are some dishes that you should definitely try. Godfish, there are many different dishes with it, I love it and I must say that I hate fish so...

If you like meat I'm sure you'd love eating piglet eventhough the best ones are in Bairrada.

As a desert why not try the famous "pasteis de nata" and/or "arroz doce"?

What places would you recommend visiting in Coimbra?

You should visit the University of Coimbra along with its beautiful and unique library ("Biblioteca Joanina"). All the churches (you'll always see something different). Take a walk downtown and on the parks. Quinta das Lagrimas Garden, the Mermaid garden as well as the green park by the Mondego river are some of many green spaces examples. And if you like shopping then may I suggest "Alma Shopping"-considered one of the most beautiful and pleasant shopping centres in Portugal- and "Forum"-where you have a remarcable view of Coimbra?

Is it good to eat out in Coimbra? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Yes, we have very good restaurants serving generous proportions of food so there's no need for fast food! Some of my favourite restaurants are: Ze Manel dos Ossos. My favourite restaurant, for sure! I nearly can remember the first time I went, I was too young, but I do know that the quality never changed! Delicious food and with the nicest service you'll ever meet. Everything is amazing but give the "bones" a try since it's one of their famous dishes. Don't let yourself be fooled by its appearence, taste them and you'll see you'll ask for more! And before you leave maybe you'd like to write a nice comment on the wall next to you like many other costumers... Interesting, right? Arrive early, they don't accept reservations and there is always a line. If you want a pizza, don't think twice "Verde Moinho" is a small and warm restaurant eventhough it's a little far form the centre, trust me, it's totally worth it! Don't leave without tasting the "Verde Moinho Pizza". And If you're willing to pay a little more why not try "Napolitano"? "Albatroz" is a good restaurant to try piglet. It is a little far from the city though, and I'm not sure if there are any public transport that takes you there. If you're in a shopping centre check if they have the "Alentejo" restaurant, I know I would...

Is the nightlife good in Coimbra? Where is good to go?

I left Coimbra when I was 17 and unfortunately I didn't go out much back then. But you'll find nice pubs near the river or different bars in "Avenida Sa da Bandeira". If you're an 70's/80's/90's fan I'm sure you'll love the "States Club" and the decoration is really cool! Or if you want a more "traditional" evening take the night to hear our famous "Fado" songs.

What advice would you give future students heading to Coimbra?

Just live like a portuguese student. Feel the tradition and yhey normally let you watch the famous "Praxe" if you're arriving at the beginning of the school year. Usually everyone is very welcoming and they will help you with anything you need. Also, take some time to visit other cities in Portugal, you'll see that they have their own story and are all quite different. To sum up, I'm sure you'll have fun, just don't forget to study!
