Experience in Coimbra, Portugal by Ana Luisa

What is it like to live in Coimbra? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Coimbra is known as the city of students. More than half of the population here are students, which means that there is a lot of entertainment and cultural customs related to the student lifestyle. I think it's one of the best Erasmus destinations.

Most students live in rented rooms, with other students. There are some places in the city where you can sit and study and even more places where you can have a cheap drink and lots of fun.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Coimbra? Is there any advice you can give?

Since there are lots of students, it's a fight to find the best places. If you don't want to stay in a student residence you have to hurry.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

You can try some typical food either in a restaurant or in the right cafeteria. You can try duck rice, sea food rice, and in some bars you can try roasted choriço. In bakeries there are lots of traditional candies, usually made with egg yolk, sugar and an almond paste.

What places would you recommend visiting in Coimbra?

Coimbra has lots of archaeological sites. Underneath the city there is a Roman village, and some other remains of other culture as well such as Jewish and Lusitanian. The old university campus is also a must-see, along with the botanical garden.

The lower part of the city called Baixa is full of nice restaurants that serve from traditional to Chinese food.

Is the nightlife good in Coimbra? Where is good to go?

It's the best. Bars close at 3. 00 am and nightclubs at 6. 00 am. There are places for every taste and it's all focused in one place. Be advised to use common sense and not walk alone in some places though.

What advice would you give to future students heading to Coimbra?

It's an experience you'll never forget so enjoy it as much as you can and don't get drunk all the time.
