Experience in Coimbra, Portugal by Ana
What is it like to live in Coimbra? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
As a Portuguese student who has lived and studied abroad, I have to say that Coimbra is magical. You can feel the academic spirit in there. For those who don't know, it's one of the oldest universities in Europe and the oldest one in Portugal.
What is the student lifestyle like in Coimbra?
During the day you go to the university, at night you can go out only "for coffee" at 10pm but the coffee will end up with arriving home at 5am next morning.
In terms of the university, it depends which degree you are doing, but usually you have classes in the morning and/or afternoon until 5pm.
How much does it cost to live in Coimbra?
I would say you would need about 400-450€ a month... About 150-200€ per rent + bills. The ticket for public transport is about 30€ or less if you manage to get a student pass. And then food, books/copies and "coffees" 150-180€.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Coimbra? Is there any advice you can give?
It might be difficult, as many of the landlords are older than 40 years. But if you look online, you might find some that speak English. If not, get in touch with the international office of your department and they will help you find accommodation.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Well, you need to go to the Baixa where you can get very cheap restaurants - Adega paco do conde or Ze manel dos ossos or even Cova funda do espanhol. With 10-15€ you can have a full meal and you eat loads.
What places would you recommend visiting in Coimbra?
University, Penedo da saudade, Penedo da meditacao, Quinta das lagrimas...
Is it good to eat out in Coimbra? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Ze manel dos ossos! The best place!
Is the nightlife good in Coimbra? Where is good to go?
There are many pubs that run until late. My favourite is Moelas. It'a small but with loads of life! You will meet the owner, Mr Americo, at the door. He will tell you everything he knows and will help you get home if you are drunk.
In October and May there is the student party week, make sure you go and experience the Queima (burn of ribbons).
What advice would you give future students heading to Coimbra?
Enjoy! And make the most of it!
