Salty lakes around Cluj

Published by flag-hu Dóra Csatári — 6 years ago

Hello all! How are You? I hope fine!

In my previous post I’ve already written about swimming pools and recreational complexes at Cluj-Napoca. Now time has come to get out into the wild, and experience natural lakes in the surroundings of Cluj. Cojocna is absolutely different than spas and baths at Cluj. Its most unique aspect is that it's surrounded by hills, actually it's in the middle of nature. The lakes don't contain chlorine, or other chemicals, they are maintained in their natural condition. Humans didn't really made changes in the flora of the lakes and of the entire summer-resort. Only once there was a trial of establishing an indoor resort, by 'borrowing' (actually taking) water from lakes for establishing a warm salty water indoor pool. The idea seemed cool at the beginning, but didn't work out finally, because the taken water was in fact lost, and it couldn't be saved and reused.

This place is close to my heart, because since I was a child we used to come several times bathing here with my family. Cojocna is a summer-resort in the hills surrounding Cluj. Situated in a territory which is rich in salt, Cojocna is a little municipality 25 kilometres away by car from Cluj-Napoca. There are daily bus routes between Cluj and Cojocna as well, departing every day in the morning, afternoon and evening. A ticket from Cluj to Cojocna costs 5 RON (1, 2 EUR). Moreover, You can travel to Cojocna by train too, but the train station is far from the summer-resort, and You’ll need to walk or hitchhike till the destination. Buses always stop right at the entrance of the salty lake resort. My favourite modality to travel to Cojocna is biking. The road is perfect for bicyclists, while asphalt quality is not perfect, and there are many steep ramps. Truly a challenging route. Once You reached Cojocna, if You’re an adrenaline-lover, You can start collecting experiences and life-sensations by visiting Cojocna Adventure Park. This adventure park is a very new, recently established facility at Cojocna.

The two salty lakes from Cojocna are visited by people complaining of rheumatologic problems, sceleto-muscular and neurologic symptoms. The water contains concentrated salt, and other minerals which are having a healing effect on body and soul. Salt water combined with sunshine can definitely improve people's physical and mental conditions, change someone's state of mind and the general mood. There are many pensioner guests among visitors, but actually every generation can met there. It's a cool place. Children, young people, couples, families can altogether enjoy Cojocna summer-resort. There’s a pool for kids, thus children can have fun in a safe environment. For athletic persons I would recommend playing football on the football pitch, visiting the tennis courts and the beach volleyball field. If You are opened to a culinary journey, go ahead and visit the stands and restaurants. You can try mici (a traditional Romanian sausage speciality, I’ve already written about on my blog), taste delicious and crunchy fried anchovies with french fries, and of course rustic pork chop prepared with salad or fries. Consequently there are a lot of things to experience at Cojocna.

The two salty lakes of Cojocna are opened for guests only during Summer. Bathing at Cojocna regularly during Summer can obviously improve physical condition. After Summer season is over, those who have been visiting Cojocna can definitely feel the change. The salty lakes have a long-lasting rejuvenating and relaxing effect. A single-entrance ticket costs 15 RON (3, 8 EUR), and unfortunately there are no discounts for students. Cojocna is beautifully reconditioned, but still remained natural. The stairs which lead into the water are made of wood, the entire bank of the lake is wooden, and the benches are also constructed of wood. You can enjoy lying on hammocks on an 'artificial' (human-made) sandy beach as well, but there’s enough green place too. Both lakes are lying at the bottom of hills, in the valley, so the view is equally great from inside and outside the lakes.
