Experience in Chania, Greece by Anna
What is it like to live in Chania? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Chania is an amazing place that everyone can find what they like. I would definetely reccomend it as a place to visit, especially during spring and summer months. It is a very beautiful city and it combines nature and great architrecture. The locals are also really helpful. All the visitors should take advantage of the nearby villages and go for excursions.
What is the student lifestyle like in Chania?
In Chania, there is a quite big Polytechnic school. Most of the students are boys. I have not studied in this city but from what I have heard the relationship among students is nice and they like help each other. Unfortunately, many places in Chania are closed during winter but there are still many choices for everyone's taste.
How much does it cost to live in Chania?
In my opinion, the prices in Chania are normal in comparison with other European cities. Maybe the accommodation is a little bit pricey.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Chania? Is there any advice you can give?
I don't think it's difficult. I believe the best choice is a place close to the city center. There are ads on the internet and at local newspapers. Landlords usually welcome foreigners.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Yummy. I would advise you to take your time and search the local taverns and restaurants so that you can find what really suits you. Great dishes are dakos, horta, horiatiki salad, souvlaki, kalitsounia and many more.
What places would you recommend visiting in Chania?
Old port, Venizelos Graves, Agora, Vamos village, Sougia, Elafonisi, Falassarna, Palaiohora, Samaria Gorge
Is it good to eat out in Chania? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Chania provides a great variety of places to eat- from fast food to posh restaurants. In general, the quality is really good and it is not something you should worry. The taverns at the old port are a bit more expensive.
Is the nightlife good in Chania? Where is good to go?
There are many coffe shops and bars at the city center and around the old port. You can also visit clubs at the center or at a place called Agia Marina, which you can reach by bus. Splatzia, Maheradika and Daliani streets are great places to go and have fun.
What advice would you give future students heading to Chania?
You should not be afraid to ask the locals about information, they are very helpful. Do not visit only the places that are famous to tourists. There are buses that you can take and explore other villages around the city. Have fun :)
