Cafes to have breakfast at in Budapest
Cafes to have breakfast at in Budapest
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about the cafes I know of in one of my favourite cities: Budapest. Previously, I have already spoken to you about the most important tourist attractions to visit in this Hungarian capital and also about its famous ruin pubs. However, today I fancy telling you about four cafes (which are also restaurants) which are as much for having lunch in as they are for breakfast, which are good quality and above all, very cheap! Let's start:
Börze
We looked up this restaurant on TripAdvisor and all the photos looked really appetizing so we decided to go there, despite the fact that it was super far away from our apartment. We went at breakfast time, so we fancied walking a bit before eating. Borze is located in the V district of Budapest, you could say that it is quite central. It is a really big and elegant restaurant, with decor that combines minimalist elements with more eye-catching walls. But the most important thing: it offers high-quality food and a really cheap price. We went for breakfast without a reservation, and luckily they had a free table for us. Just before sitting down, the waiter asked us he could put our coats in the coat rack. The truth is that it was the first time that someone had offered to take my coat in a restaurant.
We sat down and each had a cafe with milk to slowly wake up, and to fill myself up a bit I ordered an avocado toastie with cheese, sun-dried tomatoes and nuts. My friend Sandra ordered a chia pudding which was really good. Also, with the coffee they also gave us a biscuit as a side, which surprised me quite a bit: it was the first time in central Europe that they had given me something extra for free.
As for the price, super cheap. Everything came to about 3 or 4 euros each. Bearing in mind that the portions are generous and we weren't hungry, as well as the fact that the ingredients used are expensive (nuts, avocados, chia... ) I think it is a hit to go to Borze. Also, I always had the prices of things in Vienna in my mind... This breakfast in any cafe in Vienna would have cost around 15 euros. Having breakfast here goes hand in hand with starting the day in a good mood. I would recommend it 100%.
Next Door Caffee
We went to this cafe on our last day in Budapest. That morning when we woke up, we searched on the internet for cafes we could have breakfast at and we just found one that looked appetizing. We went there but they told us that without a reservation they couldn't serve us (it looks like we never learn). Also, you can't imagine how popular it is to eat breakfast out on Sundays in European capitals. The waiter, who was really nice, told us that there was another cafe to the side to have breakfast at. Coincidentally, the name of the cafe was "Next Door, which was just right for that time. So, we went in and found a small, but a very cute cafe, which had two floors.
In terms of the menu, the price was also really cheap, generous portions and everything was super good. There wasn't as much variety as at Borze, but what we had left us satisfied. We ordered the typical bowls that are made up of yoghurt with different toppings: different kinds of fruit, granola, chocolate chips. We also ordered a bowl of porridge, or oatmeal. Everything was really good. The night before we had eaten lots, so it was difficult for us to finish off what we ordered. As an important note, I should say that they only accept cash payment, which is the same for many local places in Budapest. To sum up, we left with a really good impression of Next Door Caffee.
Sonkapult
Really near to the synagogue is Sonkapult. I went here the first time that I visited Budapest, in the summer. This bar has an outside terrace, because inside it is really small (although now I think that they have renovated, from what I've seen from photos on the internet). I have to say that it took quite a long time, maybe because the kitchen is small, but the food was delicious. Great presentation and an even better taste. Here is the photo of what we ordered.
Doesn't it make your mouth water? As you can see, it depends on if you prefer sweet or savoury food, you have the option of both. Avocado toast with a poached egg or also wild asparagus and an egg. If not, some nice pancakes with oats and berries. Delicious! Important: just as in Next Door Cafeee, they only accept cash payments, so you have to go there with Forints. It isn't as cheap as the last two, but nothing ridiculous.
Café Frei
This cafe was recommended to me by a friend. The truth is that in Budapest, I completely forgot it's name, but just when I was going back to the train station, I came across it in front of me and then I recognised it. We decided to have our last coffee here. The cool thing about this cafe is that it has typical coffees from each country. For example, the one for Spain is a coffee with a dash of milk. In Italy, a capuccino. In France, "café au lait”, etc, with lots of countries. I remember that I ordered the Jamaican coffee, which to be honest, I don't remember what was special about it, but I know that it was really good. If you are coffee lovers, this could be a good option for you. We were here waiting for it to stop snowing, enjoying a hot coffee, until we drank the last sip and we went to the station to get the train back to Bratislava.
