BUDAPEST: 7 things to do, number 4 is essential!

During my Erasmus experience I told you that I had enjoyed a lot of travelling and getting to know many cities in Europe. The one I liked the most and the one I would undoubtedly return to visit again in the future, was Budapest. In the four days I spent there I enjoyed everything I possibly could and more.

People ask me, which did you like better? Buda or Pest? Yes. A city separated by the Great Danube; Buda is the higher city that is found on the left river bank of the Danube, and Pest is the lower city located on the right hand side of the river. The bridges that unite Buda and Pest are numerous and impressive, and above all they are illuminated at nighttime.

Furthermore, when I visited Budapest, it was November and it was close to Christmas. Although there was still a month to go, Budapest was already decorated and, of course, you could enjoy all of the Christmas markets. Spectacular! Visit it!

I did not know how to answer that question, I thought it was a beautiful city in all its corners and interesting wherever they were.

That's why I wanted to make a list with the places that, in my opinion, you can't miss in Budapest. Here I leave you, enjoy this wonderful city.

1. The Parliament of Budapest

For me, it's the most characteristic building for its dimensions and beauty of the city of Budapest. It is found on the banks of the Gran Danube. Don't doubt its beauty, it is impressive and much more, when night falls it is illuminated - the reflection in the water of the Parliament buildings is wonderful.

From the visit to the Parliament I would highlight:the Main Staircase, the Dome Room and the Old Upper Chamber. .

Don't think twice about visiting it if you go to Budapest. A must-see!

2. Castle of Buda.

The thing that impressed me the most about this place was its dimensions, it was so big and it is located on a hill on the Buda side of the river. In older times, there were Kings of Hungary, so don't be surprised if they tell you to visit the Royal Palace, because it is also known by that name.

If you actually visit the Castle of Buda, you will be able to enjoy the Library, the National Gallery of Hungary, and the Museum of the History of Budapest, this is what is found inside the Royal Palace now.

Don't doubt going to observe the castle during the evening when it is illuminated, but don't miss the views from the castle over the city of Budapest, either.

3. The Chain Bridge.

The view of the bridge at nightfall with the illuminated Buddha Castle in the background is magnificent. The Chain Bridge is one of the eight bridges that link Buda with Pest, this is the oldest in Budapest and one of the most wonderful.

Highlight of the Chain Bridge: the two pairs of lions that watch over it day and night.

The best time to visit the bridge is when you leave Buda Castle; crossing this bridge is another tourist activity not to be missed during your stay in Budapest.

4. Széchenyi Thermal Bath

It is obligatory to relax in the Spas of the city of Budapest. For me, the best one is undoubtedly the Széchenyi Spa, and it may be one of the largest thermal areas in Europe.

There are pools everywhere, as many in the open air as inside - with hot, boiling, cold or freezing water.

It is priceless to visit this place when it's nighttime, you will enjoy bathing much more. It is incredible how you feel in a bath hotter than 37 degrees or more, while you're watching how it's cold outside.

5. Margaret Island.

In Budapest we can enjoy many places and monuments, but also an island on which you can relax, do sport... It's also very beautiful. Here you can enjoy a huge park, where, in addition to sport, there are areas to relax.

Enjoy it by going for a ride on a bicycle; and to see how it gets dark and all the lights that illuminate Budapest are turned on, but, above all, those of the Parliament.

This park is more than 2 km long and inside it there is the Convent of Saint Margret. And, it's currently used as a viewpoint and also as a temporary exhibition hall.

In addition to this, you can enjoy light shows in a fountain inside the park.

Don't miss it!

6. The Heroes Square.

Undoubtedly, the Heroes Square is a must-see during your trip to Budapest; it is one of the most representative squares in this city. The enormous column and the two lateral colonnades stand out the most where the sculptures of the founders of the Hungarian nation are represented.

The most important thing in this square is the Museum of Fine Arts, one of the best in Budapest.

The visit is recommended at night, the night view is the most attractive face of this square.

7. Go on a boat trip down the Danube

Throughout my publication I have been saying that the best views of all places in Budapest are the night, and so it is, Budapest has a special beauty during the evening.

For this I recommend going on a boat trip on the Danube when night falls. This trip at dusk will allow you to see all of the illuminated bridges, as well as the Parliament building illuminated.

You will get to know Budapest from the Danube, enjoying the marvellous views.

You can't miss it!

Apart from all of these wonderful places, Budapest has many more charming corners that I will tell you about in another post on my blog. Many of these places are the Fishermen's Bastion, where you can enjoy magnificent views; walk through the Jewish Quarter of the city; also don't forget to try the typical Hungarian Goulash; or miss the oportunity to drink a beer at the Ruin Pubs. You should go deep into the central market and buy whatever souvenir catches your eye the most... And there are so many other things in Budapest that you shouldn't miss.

Cheers.
