Erasmus Experience in Braşov, Romania by Ignacio

Why did you choose to go to Braşov, Romania?

Mainly for where it is in the world, geographically (it's more or less in the middle of Europe), so I would be able to travel and for the price of living (it's pretty affordable).

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

My scholarship is for 9 months. As for the money I get, I'm still not sure about all this mess that the government has created.

What is the student lifestyle like in Braşov?

It's really good. You get to know everyone quickly as it's not a very big city and there's a really good vibe there.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Braşov to other students?

The city, yes. The university, I suppose that it depends on the faculty. As a general rule, I think that professors pass a lot of the Erasmus students...

What is the food like?

Well, it's good. They don't really have huge amount of variety but you can find everything. The base of the diet there is chicken.

Was is hard to find acommodation in Braşov?

Initially, I tried to find a flat for a while but the best ones had already been rented out. In the end we gave up and stayed in the student residence and, honestly, you end up getting used to it. Although you don't have all of the comfort of a flat, you'll save quite a lot of money.

How much does life in Braşov cost?

It all depends on how you live, of course... but with around €400 a month, you can live pretty well, I think.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

Personally, I'm not on any course, I can get by with English more or less.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Braşov from your city?

In my case, I travelled to Madrid and took a flight to Bucharest. To get to Braşov, there's a train that costs about €10 (or €5 with a student ID from Braşov)

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Braşov?

It depends on induvidual tastes. There's everything from big clubs (Sofa, Goha or Tequila) to small pubs, where you can even find better music and another kind of atmosphere.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants?

There's a bit of everything, from chains like KFC or McDonald's and a lot of pizzerias, there are places with the traditional food, too, like Sergiana.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Braşov in the future?

Simply that if you think you can tolerate living in the residence (which isn't even that bad), you should because you can spend the money you save on trips and partying.
