What is it like to live in Brasov? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

I would recommend the life in Brasov. A part of the city has a direct connection to the mountains. You can climb them the whole year. In the winter the ski resorts come alive and the area is animated with people of various ages practising winter sports. The city also has a big size ice skate arena, opened every day. At the exit to Bucharest, you can find 2 amazing waterfalls (you have ladders to climb through them). Every weekend in the old city centre there are different music festivals (local, international), medieval festivals. At the beginning of September, we have a festival similar to the Oktoberfest. In the weekend after Easter, I recommend watching the traditional horsemen parade, 7 groups of horsemen dressed in a traditional costume (even the horses are decorated) salute the pedestrians and inviting them to a huge barbecue. At the moment the transport to Brasov is by train, bus or car (I recommend the train to avoid traffic, especially in the winter period). In a couple of years (2-3 years) the airport will be open, now it's under construction.

What is the student lifestyle like in Brasov?

The student life is very good. You can stay in a rental apartment or in the University dormitories. The prices are ok, +/-50 euros per month with all the furnishing included.

The University has a library located in the city centre, with 50. 000 books and articles, also you can go to the city library (it is located near the Erasmus office, it has a couple of branches spread across the city). Recently it was opened a Research Institute for masters programs and PhD students.

How much does it cost to live in Brasov?

The food prices are ok. I recommend the farmers' markets because they are a bit cheaper and the products are fresher.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Brasov? Is there any advice you can give?

It's not difficult. You can send an e-mail before your arrival or you can go directly to a hotel, hostel, motel.

I recommend you to send an e-mail before your arrival, so you won't have to worry after.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is great, it's healthy and it's cheap (except for those type of dishes that require lots of preparation).

I'm not so picky about food. Like the chef Andrew Zimmern says "If it looks good, eat it".

What places would you recommend visiting in Brasov?

The old town, Black Church (the biggest medieval church in eastern Europe), Warthe, Black and White Towers, Rope Street (narrowest street in Europe), Bran Castle, Mount Tampa (located in the city center, 968 meters high), Cetatuia (a small fortress located on a hill near the Erasmus office), the first Romanian school (you can find many things there, about the history of the city, not known by most of the citizens).

Is it good to eat out in Brasov? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

You can find a big variety of restaurants, from fast food to traditional cuisine. It depends on everyone's taste.

My favourite spots include Deane's Irish pub, Musik Caffe, Caffe Central, Pizza Hot, "Tara Barsei" Restaurant (local cuisine), Decebal's Cellars (a wine cellar plus a restaurant), Saray cakes.

Is the nightlife good in Brasov? Where is good to go?

The nightlife is full of dance and joy, there are some nightclubs spread.

Many of the outdoor concerts last till 3 am.

What advice would you give future students heading to Brasov?

If you are well organized, you can study well, but also have fun and get good memories.
