No, not these guys. Though they’re not unrelated.

Nor these either. No, no, I’m not here to talk about anime. And I’m definitely not here to talk about the religious origins of the Sins. What I’m here to talk about is how to apply them to Erasmus life, and yes, they do apply.

Ok, let’s start this off with:

Lust

This one’s pretty obvious, isn’t it? I don’t even have to go into detail here! … What, I do? Really? I mean, it’s really… oh fine. Well, we have all heard about how Erasmus is perfect for partying right? And amongst this there is sex, and a lot of it. The Lust sin is represented by intense desires, and the most common of those in this context is the carnal desire. Of course, there are many kinds of desires, but let’s not dwell into that.

Gluttony

Ah Erasmus, the perfect time to get fat. Why? Because of all the food you eat. New country, new foods that you absolutely must try. And as if this wasn’t enough, you also have lots of Erasmus parties that you go to which have a great amount of food as well. I for one prefer to drink with some snacks by my side. (no wonder I’m getting fat…)

Greed

The materialistic desire of wealth and other possessions, in other words, money and other stuff like souvenirs. You’ll definitely need money in Erasmus, but the problem is when you crave more than you actually need because you want this and that and to party hard. That’s what this is about.

Sloth

Being lazy is something a lot of people are good at (me included *ahem*), and in Erasmus it may or may not worsen. Although, if we’re talking about classes and going to them, then it definitely worsens. You see, there are many parties, right? And after a party you just want to rest so you stay in bed till the afternoon. You may tell people the night before “Dude I can’t get drunk cuz I got classes in the morning. At 9h! I really can’t miss that class or I’ll be screwed. ” Yeah, right. We all know how that song and dance goes. Neglecting your responsibilities and giving in to fun and laziness is classic Erasmus behavior, honestly. And I’m not just talking about parties and classes here.

Wrath

That feel when you’re at the end of the semester and you have tons of work piled up, getting pissed off at everything and everyone, including yourself. Probably because you just ignored the fact that you had stuff to do and just had fun. I get that. Then you have to study and you don’t understand a thing of what you’re reading. But in the end...

Envy

Hm, not quite sure about this one, but I suppose a case of Envy would be when you’re at the club or bar and practically everyone is hooking up with someone except for you. Although this isn’t really limited to Erasmus, it’s a little heightened in this situation, since everyone tells you that in Erasmus it’s a lot easier to pick up girls/guys, but when you still have no luck you obviously get a bit jealous of the ones that do.

You’ll also meet lots of people with different traits, abilities and possessions, some of which may cause you to be jealous of them and covet what they have.

Pride

The original sin, that translates to one loving oneself and thinking that the rest are inferior to him/her, akin to narcissism. I don’t think it’s that common, but you may meet some people that think quite highly of themselves and frequently mock others. Most common would be to find people that boast about their country to no end and compare the country of others in a depreciative way. Like this video.

Just sayin’…

And then there are those that take way too much pride of talking about how many girls/guys they’ve bedded or showing how much they can drink while upside-down above hot coal and while juggling a bunch of cups. Okay, this last one was a bit too much, but you get the point.

There is also that type of student that looks down on those that keep partying without concern for their studies or dignity, thinking of how foolish those people look, while classifying guys as “idiots” or “brainless oafs” and girls as “sluts”, and taking pride in the fact that he/she’s not like this common rabble; that he/she is a highly intelligent intellectual individual involved in far more interesting activities.

That’s all of them! Hope you liked it, and also that I didn’t offend anyone. If I did… come on man, it’s just a joke. Grow up.

Well, until next time!
