A short trip to the beach of Esposende
Esposende is a small town that has one of the longest beaches in the Minho region. It is also a well-known destination for avid surfers or people that would like to relax a bit by the ocean. That’s why, we, a group of girls on Erasmus, decided to visit Esposende.
The easiest way to get to Esposende from Barcelos?
Well, since we couldn’t find information on the web, we went straight to the tourist office in Barcelos from where we got the timetable of the bus to Esposende. The woman there was nice enough to hand the timetable to us and explain from where to catch the bus.
Thus, since we have missed the earlier bus, our next option was the bus from 13:30, which we could catch from the bus stop near the Campo da Feira. Therefore, we went there near the Campo da República street below the hospital in Barcelos and waited for the bus to come for some time. I would say that this time the bus was on time, so we went inside after paying 2.65 euros for one-way tickets and our trip began. Luckily, in forty minutes we reached Esposende and took of nearby the Marginal Café there.
How we spent our half-day trip to Esposende?
Our trip started next to the bus stop where we had to walk straight for about thirty minutes on the Avenida Engenheiro Eduardo Arantes de Oliveira to reach the nearest beach. Thus, at some point, we reached the wooden bridge that would later take us to the beach. On the right side of it, the Fortress of São João Baptista de Esposende was standing tall since the seventeenth century.
Then, we continued a bit further where we found the beach of Esposendeand stayed there sunbathing for a couple of hours. Unfortunately, even though the sun was up, it was still quite cold, so we decided to leave around 5 pm in the afternoon.
Thus, we went for a walk around the city of Esposende and crossed its nice square with lots of gardens full of blossoming flowers. Exactly next to it was the Igreja Matriz de Esposende, which was a beautiful church with two identical towers on top of it with one of them holding the bells of the church. On the inside, the church was made out of golden ornaments and the walls were white and it didn’t have the typical azulejo tiles around it.
Then, we continued exploring the little city from within where we found a small fountain made in the form of a fishing boat near the Santa Casa Misericordia Esposende. However, since it was getting dark we went to the coast of Esposende and next to the Municipal pools Foz do Cávadowhere we found a very nice park to walk around or just chill.
Finally, we ended at Esposende Maritime Museum, which was closed at the time, so we got back to Marginal Café for a quick coffee and then got our bus from the bus stop near it to go back in Barcelos.
Esposende is a very small city in the north of Portugal, but it is for sure one of the most beautiful places where you can go for a short vacation and enjoy its vast beaches. It is the perfect destination for a short trip to the beach.
